Dell XPS M1330 doesn't work properly when battery is inside

hello all,

My dell XPS M1330 doesn't properly work when the battery is inside the computer. I don't know if the battery is faulty. When I remove the battery and turn it on with the adapter it works very fine. But when I try to turn on when the battery is inside and no power adapter then it won't even boot. When I plug the adapter in and the battery is inside it just freezes either during boot or after boots into Windows.

here is the battery I bought on eBay:

Unless the is some other issue, the battery is the first suspect.  If a replacement (preferably OEM, if available) doesn't solve the problem, then it is the mainboard that's bad.

That's a very long shot -- if the battery doesn't charge, it's another story - but if the presence of the battery stops the system from booting, it is far more likely the battery or the mainboard that's bad.  That board is present in the system, with or without the battery.

hi ejn63

I just replaced the motherboard in the laptop. I bought a motherboard which was advertised as removed from working laptop. When I boot the laptop the "A" light blinks for about 1 minute and the laptop shuts off by itself. There is no picture on the screen and the cpu fan never kicks off. What does that suggest to you? This is the first time I swap a motherboard and I don't know if I missed something. I am sure I plugged in all cables.. Thanks in advance.

It depends on what the other two LEDs are doing - if they're both solid ON, with caps flashing, it means the board doesn't sense the CPU.  There's usually a lockdown screw next to the CPU socket - but sure the CPU is firmly locked in place.

32 other buyers bought it besides me. Listed as "tested".. contacted seller, waiting for response.

are you serious? Why did the seller ship me a board with a password?

That is a question only the seller can answer.  The password is stored on the board -- so it had to have been locked with one.  Why they didn't check it before shipment you'll have to ask.

You'll need to contact the seller of the mainboard to have it replaced -- there is no way Dell will issue you a  password for a board obtained from a third party (and it'd cost you $60+ just to call to have it reset).

I re-seated the hard drive and now it is booting. But it is prompting me for password. It didn't prompt me for password before. Here is a picture:
