Can't get out of BIOS?

I have a 4 year old Inspiron 5160.  One day, the laptop would not proceed to windows.  The progress bar while in bios just keeps starting over and over. Pressing the escape and function keys does nothing.  About a week ago, a large black bar appeared running vertically on the screen.  Could this be related to the problem I'm having now?  Thanks for any help/suggestions.
