Yaha Virus

I have had the yaha worm virus. I had no anti virus whilst i received it, yet i recognised I had a virus so i downloaded a free virus scan. This detected the virus as the yaha worm, yet it wouldn't remove it as it was a free, rubbish one. It told me where the virus was located. It was located in the system part of windows. I was in such a desperate state to remove it I deleted this. I am not that experienced with computers or virus' as you can tell! This didnt solve the problem, so I downloaded the stinger from macafee. This detected it and destroyed them all. My computer is now fine, but every time I switch on my computer, it comes up sayin something about the system.ini part or something or other is missing. It suggests reinstalling windows, but if I do this i will lose all of the programs and files won't I? Does anyone have any solutions to this? It works fine once you have 'pressed any key' which it tell you to do at start up. Please help, I need to solve this soon.

You might also want to investigate AVG Anti-Virus. It's free and has gotten good reviews.

How did you know I was worried about my mp3s lol! How long will it take? How do I go about doing it? How come all my files won't be touched? I've had to recover a ton that went with the virus. I've backed up most of my important stuff on floppy disk. The one's that aren't in my documents though will they go? Because I can only get to them from history in microsoft word when I go to open a file. I've copied the majority into my documents. Will these ones in history be lost?

go ahead and reinstall windows. It will put those system files back in, and it wont touch any files you have added since getting the computer. your mp3s are safe  :)

OS = Operating System, such as Windows 98 or Windows XP. Or Linux for that matter.

Well you see, Microsoft knows how often people have to reinstall Windows, so they have made it so you (usually) don't lose anything in the process. Windows doesn't really delete anything when you reinstall it. It just lays the files from the Windows CD onto the hardrive, which fills in the missing files. It doesn't care what's in your My Documents or My Mp3z folder.

Before we can tell you how to reinstall it, we need to know which Windows you have.

And it will be around 30 minutes, give or take depending on how new your system is.

Also, start using Panda antivirus online, it's free and it has caught viruses on my computer that Housecall (Trend Micro) couldn't delete.

And get an anti virus application running, new one and keep it updated.Especially have on, testing downloads and e-mail. Set the program  for on  at boot up and on at shut down. Some of the free ones do not give you many options.

OS is the operating system, Windows 98, 98SE, 2000 or XP.

Hey Jake, glad to have a guy like you right on top of things

As far as reinstalling 98, it's fairly simple. Boot your computer with your Start Up diskette, when it asks to enable large drive support say yes, when it asks if you want to enable cd-rom devices say yes. When its going, throw in your Windows 98 CD and at the A:> prompt

type:  D:

then hit enter

it should now say

D:>

at which point you type in

setup

and press enter.

from that point on follow the directions on the screen. Before you start any of this, make sure you have your Windows 98 cd sleeve, you will need your product ID number!!! If you don't have it you're stuck.
