XPS 8700 PSU

Short version:  I need a replacement PSU for my XPS 8700.  Where can I get one?  Or a different one that can be plugged in without any issues.

Long version:  while I was away for a month, it looks like my old reliable 8700's PSU has given up the ghost.  Computer does not power at all.  And if I unplug it for a while, then plug it back in, nothing happens.  It used to be be whenever I would re-plug the computer, the fan and some LEDs would light up for a second, but not anymore.  There is a button and green LED at the back of the PSU, and if I press the button, the LED turns on, the fan powers up, but they both go off the moment I remove my finger from the button, and computer still doesn't power up.  Don't want to replace the computer since it is running fine and more than enough for my needs.  But is the PSU shot?  And if so, what's the easiest way to replace it?

There are many PSUs that will work in the 8700, in my opinion, the systems are worth the investment of a new PSU.  As a side note, this weekend I just replaced a family members  PSU in an XPS 8500 and I expect it to last a long, long time.

If I had to buy one today and was on a tight budget I would buy the SeaSonic S12II 520. It is a solid power supply and for the next 23 hours is on sale at newegg for $29.99 after a $!5 rebate.

another solid power supply is the  EVGA 500 B1 100-B1-0500-KR 80+ BRONZE 500W.

It is $39.99 after  a $10 rebate also at newegg.

I tend to be a PSU snob, and invest a little more and the unit I bought for a family member was the EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G3, 220-G3-0550-Y1. It is a higher quality PSU. More efficient, quieter and of course more expensive. It is currently running about $70, but I picked it up for less on a sale the day I bought it.

All of these fit snug in the 8700 and all are a tad larger than the original one installed, but they fit fine and any of these are better quality and efficiency than the OEM power supplies in the 8700.

good luck.

ps: I suggest you replace the MoBo battery while you have the covers off.

All good suggestions, but I would not try to do too much all at one time. Replace the PSU first, make sure everything works, write down your BIOS settings, then replace the battery. It should not be a problem to run the system with the covers off for a short time.

Thanks folks.  Ordered the EVGA 500 B1 100-B1-0500-KR 80+ BRONZE 500W from Newegg.  Will see how it goes.  Removing the cover again later is no big deal, but I wouldn't want to run the system that way when I have 2 young kittens at home.  :)
