I don't know if there are any problems but the OptiPlex 3020 is on the list of computers that have been tested with Windows 10 Creators Update. See www.dell.com/.../dell-computers-tested-for-windows-10-fall-creators-update-and-previous-versions-of-windows-10

It is generally better if you do a clean install versus an in-place upgrade.

But to do a clean install you need a product key for the Windows 10.

You may want to do a dual-boot of Windows 10 with Windows 7.

Also, remember that after the OS install that the drivers need to be installed chipset first.

Isn't the free update to Windows 10 over?

Why wouldn't he need a Windows 10 key?

Or are you referring to the backdoor free upgrade that expires Dec. 31, 2017?

Its a Desktop with mainly Intel hardware, it should work fine. P.S. no need to buy Windows 10 because Windows 7 keys are compatible with Windows 10 just use your Windows 7 key during installation.

Activation Mechanism 1. Upgrade Installs using the Media Creation Tool or launching the setup from the .iso worked since Build 10240 (Version 1507). There was about 2 weeks where the Upgrade Install of Build 14393 (Version 1607) searched for an update that prompted for a Windows 10 only key. This could be circumvented by not searching for updates during the Upgrade Install. In any case it was complained about and Microsoft removed this update consequently the normal Media Creation Tools can be used for Initial Upgrade Installs (no workarounds required). Tested Last Week on new hardware* still works.

Activation Mechanism 2. Clean Installations with Windows 7 OEM Keys or Windows 8.x OEM Keys worked since Build 10586 (Version 1511). Tested on the 18/10/2017 and 29/10/2017. Tested on the 18/10/2017** and 29/10/2017*** still works.

Activation Mechanism 3. (A subset of Activation Mechanism 1 useful for faded COAs) Since Build 10240 one could copy GatherOSState.exe from the sources folder of the installation .iso/Bootable USB to the Desktop. Then could then generate a genuineticket.xml. They could then clean install Windows 10 without a product key. After clean install the genuineticket.xmlcould be copied to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket and Windows would be activated after a restart. Tested Last Week on new hardware**** still works.

* VM with SLIC 2.1 passthrough. 1. Windows 10 installed without a key and online (not activated). 2. Windows 7 Clean Installed. 3. Upgrade to Windows 10. 4. Product Activated.

** 1. Windows 10 Pro (Version 1709) installed without a key and online (not activated) on OptiPlex 790. 2. Windows 7 Pro key input post-installation. 3. Product Activated. also tested on 07/08/16 with video recording here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcYkGqGetQk

*** 1. Windows 10 Home (Version 1709) Installed using a Windows 7 Home Premium Product Key on an Inspiron 560. 2. Product Activated.

**** VM with SLIC 2.1 passthrough. 1. Windows 7 Clean Installed. 2. Genuine Ticket Created. 3. Clean install of Windows 10. 4. Windows 10 not Activated. 5. Genuine Ticket copied over and computer restarted. 6. Product Activated.

The Assistive Technologies upgrade may officially end however as I've said all along for Microsoft to break Windows 10 activation mechanisms will likely lead to far more hassle for them than it solves.

I would suspect however that they merely want to remove the Assistive Technologies installer because its Build 14393 (Version 1607) and it reaches End of Life soon.

Good to know.

Apparently, Microsoft lied and wants people to upgrade to Windows 10 because not as many are doing it as they wanted.

However, if I was the OP, I'd stay away from Windows 10 unless he wants upgrades to hose his system. LOL.

I hate Windows 10.

Yes it was an upgrade now or you'll have to pay... marketing hype.

Unlike the other lemmings, I will stay with Windows 7 (for work) and Linux (personal use).

I upgraded my OptiPlex 380 to Win 10 from Win 7 ult. 64 bit w/o any hitches! A new 60Gb SSD was the best $$$ spent so far on this workhorse.

Good for you, but there are some less fortunate Dell owners with their upgrade.

It simply is how much hassle do you want to tolerate if something should go wrong.
