U2713H USB Problems

USB is highly unreliable as far as I'm concerned, sometimes it works (VERY NIIICE), sometimes it doesn't.

Well, it was working for me a while back, now it has stopped working.

Specifically my U2713H USB hub doesn't recognise any USB devices. There is power there since I charge my phone there every day, but none of my USB devices can be used through it.

Admittedly I was playing around with trying to get USB to get recognised in Oracle VirtualBox, so perhaps I broke something somewhere.

How do I go about getting it to work again? I've tried plugging in the USB connector cable to a different slot in my computer with no luck.

Turn PC OFF and unplug.  Turn Monitor off and UN PLUG.  Hold the power button on the PC and on the Monitor to Discharge and reset.  Then plug PC back in and Monitor back in.  Turn PC on first then monitor.  If it still doesnt work try mouse in the usb hub on the monitor.

The monitor has a USB cable that goes from the monitor to the PC.

If this is not plugged in on both ends the USB hub on monitor wont work but it will still charge phone.

Tried resetting as suggested, still not working. I tried plugging in the mouse into the USB port on the monitor, no lights on the mouse come on. I don't know how the mouse is designed and whether it's supposed to only light up if there is a signal, but the mouse through usb port still doesn't work and memory sticks don't get recognised either.

Hi,

Firstly, can you check the USB port on your computer that you use to connect to the monitor? (just try a mouse or something)

If that's ok, try using a different USB cable to connect to the monitor.

If a different cable has the same issue, can you try the other USB port on the bottom of the monitor?

If it's still not working, it looks like the USB hub has a hardware failure.

If so, please PM me with the monitor's service tag and I'll look into options for you.

Thanks

Version of Windows and PC model?

If the monitor has an on-screen display (OSD), open it and see if there's an option to disable the monitor's USB ports and change that setting, if necessary.

Open Device Manager and  expand list under USB. Double-click each USB root hub and then click the Power Management tab. Make sure "Allow PC to turn off..." is NOT checked.  Repeat for all root hubs and reboot.

Then open Windows Power plan screen. Select the active power plan and click the link to change its settings. Look for a link on next screen for Advanced options. On the Advanced screen, disable USB selective suspend, if not already disabled. Save the change, if prompted and reboot.

It has been a while since you messed about with USB, so you may not want to do this, but you could try doing a System Restore to last date when you know the monitor ports were working. Personal files won't be affected, but any software or updates installed after the date of the Restore point will have to be reinstalled. And always a good idea to back up personal files on external media before doing a System Restore, to be safe.

I'm using W7 and it's a homebrew computer.

Thanks, I tried your suggestions in device manager and windows power plan setting, everything was set correctly so it's not this. And no option in the settings of the monitor.

Yes, wouldn't have a clue when the last time the USB ports worked was, wouldn't know when to reset this to.

I guess it's possible the USB hub failed in the monitor. Have you tried a different USB cable between PC and monitor, as Alasdair suggested?

Otherwise, I guess you'll have to work with  Dell Tech Support to get it repaired/replaced, assuming it's still under warranty.
