Replace Dell D/8200 Motherboard with Standard ATX = Buy new Operating System?

Is it true that if I replace my Dell motherboard with a non Dell motherboard that the factory installed O/S on my hard drive will no longer work? I have WinXP Pro, and I can't imagine that I would have to buy a new O/S, but that is what I have heard in post.

Thanks for any info.

Thanks for the feedback,

Is there a formal process to submit a request for license transfer to Microsoft?

Thanks

Erik

I think so but I don't know what it is. Try contacting msn support, I'm not sure if you can if your OS is an oem one, it might have to be a retail version.

carrelc,

The version sold with your system is BIOS locked to the Dell system. You may try to install it on another system but if you call for the Product ID that is required for the system you will not get it as this is locked to the system. You would need to get another copy. Once installed windows XP is locked to the system that it was installed on as it was at the time of installation. Changes to the system can be done but if you have to reinstall the windows then you will have to get a new key for this as it is configured by the hardware on the system.
