POWER BUTTON
My power button on my 7-year-old Inspiron 1 now glows red (amber?) when I start the computer. The screen remains dark, Any ideas on what that may be?Solutions?

Solid Amber Power Button = Dead Motherboard.
SERVICE TAG is large barcode on the back.
Typical for Inspiron 520,540,560,570 etc.

If you have a geeky friend or relative, maybe they can replace the battery for you before you rush out to buy a new motherboard or a new PC. Or maybe take it to a trustworthy PC shop for a look-see.
The instructions to replace the battery will be in the service manual for your specific PC model, which you can download (free) from Dell's Support site.
The battery (#CR2032) only costs ~US$2, and isn't very hard to replace. Can't guarantee this is just a battery problem but a battery would be an inexpensive fix compared to replacing the motherboard or getting a whole new PC.

There are many different Inspiron models sold by Dell, please post your model number.

Bev, I'm a 70-year-old man. The model number is an Inspiron 1.There are other numbers on the back of the machine along with barcodes. I just can't read them.
My sense is that the Community is way beyond my computer capabilities. I thank you for your quick response. Jeff

If you have the Dell Service Tag number for your PC (look for a sticker on the case), go to this page and put that number in. It will tell you exactly what model you have.
support.dell.com/.../index.aspx
Post the exact model number here, but do NOT post the Service Tag which is your confidential info.

When was last time you replaced the motherboard battery?

Thank you for your answer. I had no idea that there's battery for the motherboard. I probably will drop out of the Community. I'm just not smart enough to deal with the complexities of computers. Again, thanks.

I really appreciate your answer which was very encouraging. I think I may go that route.
