Installing ubuntu on XPS 8920

Hi!

I had my new XPS 8920 delivered today with pre-installed Windows 10. I am trying to install ubuntu 16.04 LTS on it but to no avail. Here is what I have tried so far:

  1. Downloaded the ubuntu ISO
  2. Burned it on a flash drive with rufus (partition scheme GPT for UEFI)
  3. turned off the fast startup
  4. Did the Shift+Restart, then UEFI firmware thing where it tells me that I need to click restart to get access to the UEFI firmware
  5. when the system restarts, it just boots back up to windows
  6. If I try to press F2 my screen remains black with my monitor's light blinking and nothing happens. I have to press escape for it to start windows.

Cannot seem to figure out how to select the USB drive as primary boot device. Any help/leads would be much appreciated.

Thanks. I figured out a solution to the blank screen problem: just had to connect the monitor via the DVI output rather than the Display Port or HDMI. Will look into the linux board.

We only validated the XPS 8920 for Windows 10. You should repost this issue on the Linux board and see if they have any thoughts.

To boot from usb device on dell machines insert the usb with the machine off power on then press F12 on the keyboard and a menu will appear with available boot devices after that select the option that reads something like usb disk 2.0 or removable device. Keep in mind there is no official dell drivers but something you could do is indentify you computers specific hardware and go to the hardware manufacturer's website and look for ubutu drivers from the manufacturer, (intel, nivdia, amd).

F12 booting is not offered unless F2 CMOS setup has SECURE BOOT OFF and CSM ON.

Its easier to just burn an ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS dvd and boot from that.

I recommend burn at 4x or 8x or 16x whichever is the slowest speed for your model.

There are two images available, each for a different type of computer:

64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop image
Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the i386 images instead. Choose this if you are at all unsure.
32-bit PC (i386) desktop image
For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.

If you don't want to burn a disk and want a lot more help then you buy a book that has a commercial dvd with ubuntu and a manual.
