Inspiron 5675 Desktop NVME M.2 slot speed

Just got the desktop and put in a Samsung 960 EVO SSD.

I was only getting half of the rated speed of the SSD and noticed that the SSD was running at PCIE Gen2 instead of Gen3.

Can anyone confirm if the NVME slot on the motherboard is Gen3 capable or am I stuck with the slower speeds?

The M.2 slot is Gen 2. Unbelievable. What about the PCIe slots? If they are Gen 3, maybe you can use a PCIe NVME adapter.

I just talked to a Dell sales representative, and he assured me that the M.2 NVME slot is third generation. By linking to this topic, he then suggested that I return the equipment if I am not satisfied. We just want to know the equipment we're buying, why is it so difficult?

That's a good sign. Im seriously thinking it's a driver/bios setting issue.

It would be so dumb for them to cheap out the NVME port like that.

Hopefully someone from Dell comes in and clarifies this for us.

Yes. I will hold my purchase until that.

Same here. I'm very interested in the 5675 but holding on it until we get a definitive answer. A half speed NVME M.2 slot is a deal breaker for me.

Out of curiosity, what speed does GPU-z (free download) report for the x16 AMD video card which I assume you have in this PC?

I ran it and it's running at PCIe 3.0 x16

base.rox,

What specific video card is in your Inspiron 5675? What specific video card driver are you running for that video card?

We know. We are also working another 5675 thread dealing with the PCIe x16 slot running at x8. You ran GPU-Z and it said x16. They ran it and it said x8. So we are gathering all the data. Make sense?

It's an RX 580 running on the default Dell drivers.

I dont think how it would matter because the issue is with the NVMe slot and not the GPU

Now you understand why I asked about the GPU-z results which -at least- say your x16 video card slot is working at the rated speed on the PCI-e bus.

Is there a new/better driver from Samsung for the SSD you installed or maybe a firmware update? You might check the Samsung site for any updates...

And it might be helpful if you post screenshots of whatever software is saying the SSD is running at only half speed and one of your GPU-z report's Graphics Card tab showing the video card is running at x16.

base.rox saw your cross post in the other thread.  Just a quick question...which m.2 slot did you install that 960 EVO into?  It wasn't explicitly stated in this thread, but your 960 EVO is in the PCIe/NVMe slot right (the one that's labeled slot 2)?

M.2 slot 1 near the PCIe (video card) slot 2 near the drive cage - lower right of the motherboard

M.2 slot 2 is between the ram and the wifi card - upper right of the motherboard

I was contemplating swapping out the stock SSD that came with the 5670, but when i started seeing people post comments about low performance I paused a bit.

The other concern i was having is are both of the m.2 slots equivalent...the label for m.2 slot 1 is actually different from the one for m.2 slot 2.  The sticker on slot 1 says "M.2 1 SATA SSD" while the sticker for slot 2 says "M.2 2 PCIe/NVME SSD".   I don't have a spare NVMe drive to simply install it myself and test.

Also in looking at and googling the part number listed on the SK Hynix SC311 m.2 form factor SSD that came stock, it does seem that it is SATA and not NVMe.

I'm hoping that Dell can help us all get these issues sorted out.  Or at very least offer clarification/corrections to the specifications for customers.

Thanks for updating the video info here and in the other thread. I see that Dell-Chris M has contacted L3 support...

And see, there is logic to the strange questions we ask... :emotion-5:
