Inspiron 3668 Fan runs after shutdown

I finally finished setting up my new 3668.  Added SSD and 2TB 2.5" drive, and moved all software and apps from my old machine.

Now when I do a shutdown, Win10 shuts down as expected, but the fans (both CPU and desk) switch to high speed and stay there.  The machine never goes quiet.

If I unplug the power cord it shuts up, but restarts as soon as I plug it in again.  This is not the brief fan blip that normally happens when poser is restored.  First I get the blip, then the fans accelerate to full speed.

What I have done temporarily is to set the BIOS to restart Windows after a power failure.  That way, I can keep the machine on all the time, and if power fails it will just restart.  Otherwise, a power failure would give me full fan speed indefinitely when power is restored.

I would certainly prefer a way to turn the machine off if I choose to - without having to unplug it.

The machine was working properly when I got it.  So, I suspect I disconnected something when I was working inside the case, or inadvertently changed some BIOS setting.

Any ideas??

Mauryk,

Click the link below to download the online manual. You can possibly use it to trace the connections on the motherboard. Also, boot into the bios by starting the computer and tapping the F2 key. Once inside the bios you can set the bios to defaults.

I had looked at the manual and checked all connections on the MB.  Also tried CMOS reset.  It did not help.

Does the SSD have the OS on it now? If you still have the original hard drive with Windows on it, what happens if you disconnect the SSD and boot from the factory hard drive and then shut down?

How did you "moved all software and apps from my old machine"? Did you install them into Windows on the new PC or just copy the application files over from the old PC?

EDIT: Did you clone the original hard drive to migrate the OS onto the SSD? Or did you do a clean install of Windows on the SSD? If you did a clean install on the SSD, did you install the drivers?  Ether way make sure you have the latest versions of the drivers, including chipset(s).

It was a clean install of the OS and Apps.

I built the SSD system by using the System Restore USB I generated with the original install.  It configured the SSD with all the appropriate partitions in the right place, and installed the OS.  When I booted the SSD, I had to set up Win10  like it was new.

I then installed all the software from DVD's or downloads.

Then I copied the user directory from my old system.

Everything was working as expected until I arranged all the cables and closed up the case.  Then if would not shut down properly.  Reopening the case did not help.  I have also tried to disconnect all the drives except for the boot SSD, but no help.

I also did a flash of the latest BIOS.  No help.

Well, if everything worked correctly until you closed the case, you probably want to open up and reseat all the connectors to motherboard and drives again, and reseat all RAM and PCI-e cards in their slots too.

With the case open, boot up and confirm that it starts and shuts off correctly, including fans. If it does, then close the case being really careful not to pull/push anything out of its connection to the motherboard.

Already had tried reseating all connectors.  This time pulled and reseated Video (PCI-e card) and memory.

No joy.

Still won't power down - even with case open.

Reboot Win 10 in Safe Mode and then shut down normally without launching any apps. Do the fans still run?

If no, then something loading during a normal startup is causing the problem, and you'll have to disable what's loading at normal startup, one at a time, to pin it down. Then uninstall that app and reinstall it.

Do you still have the factory HDD with the OS on it? If so, disconnect the SSD and connect that HDD to SATA0. Boot normally and see what happens when you shut down...

Tried boot in safe mode then shutdown.  No change.

Tried boot from original OS HD.  No change.

However ... some progress.

Changed Boot setting under Power Management.  "Deep Sleep" mode changed from "enabled S4 & S5" to "disabled".

Now fan still runs all the time, but in a very slow and quiet mode.

Running out of ideas here. But if booting from the original HDD didn't help, this sound like a motherboard issue.

Did you change the AC Recovery option in BIOS setup? Make sure it's set to "Do nothing" when recovering from an AC power failure. And what about Wake On LAN, if that's an available option in BIOS?  Make sure that's disabled too.

Did you reset BIOS to the defaults by selecting that option in BIOS setup or did you remove the motherboard battery? You might try removing the motherboard battery and pressing/holding the power button for ~30 sec. Then reinstall the battery, and boot up with only mouse, monitor and keyboard connected, and shut down normally after you get to the desktop.

If all else fails, you should put the PC back to its factory hardware and software state and then contact Dell Tech Support for assistance under the warranty.
