Inspiron 3647, small dt, CPU Upgrade?

Wondering if it's even possible.

Looking at  i3-7350K as an improvement on what I have, but it would seem dependent upon compatibility with motherboard.

Any thoughts?

Thank you.

The CPU is upgradeable, but not to that one - you're limited to the fourth-generation Core CPUs (the 7350 is seventh-generation).

You can use an i3-4160 (or other i3-4xxx, i5-4xxx, etc.).

End of life means out of production.  These system did ship with the i7-4790 CPU option -- the K versions are designed for overclocking (they're not locked), which isn't worth paying more for in this case, since the system doesn't support overclocking.

There is also a severe power limitation.  Any processor other than the one that came with the unit is not covered under the Dell warranty.

Thanks @ejn6. I'll look into it to see if any advantage.

@SpeedStep, "power limitation" raises more questions for me. Not sure how to find answers.

Warranty expired already.

Thanks anyway. :)

I don't know what "end of life" means exactly. I'd need the 4-4.4 GHz to gain much. Sockets Supported looks ok, but the TDP on this one is 88 W compared to 54 W for my current  i3-4130.

How does that fit within "power limitations", SpeedStep?

Thanks again, ejn63.

The K version, from what I'm looking at, costs about 10% more than the standard i7-4790 and gives 10% more speed - without overclocking. Seems reasonable to me. There is an S version as well. I don't know what the S means, but price/performance looks about the same as standard. TDP is a little lower.

I still don't know what "power limitations" SpeedStep was talking about, but guessing if the system shipped with an i7 then it should be ok for upgrade.

Haven't checked other options, i5 and such, but will before deciding.

Cheers.

From another thread, ".. it has been the case that some model lines ship with different mainboards when different CPUs are ordered from the factory" and advice from a friend more knowledgeable than I to the effect that the K version would require overclocking support from the motherboard. I don't know about that, but:

For my purposes, because I can share CPU work between any number of networked machines, it would be safer and more cost-effective to buy another laptop. Done that before. :)

About $1,000 for 2-3 GHz, compared to $500 for 0.6-1 GHz with no guarantee it would work.

Btw, ejn63, I did eventually spot the Intel Core ix (4th Generation) list in 3647 spec sheet.

Thanks all. Guess it's bye for now.
