Dell XPS 8500 additional video card
Hi
I wish to add a new graphics card - a geforce gtx 1060.
I know how to insert, power up etc - but on starting the PC with the card in I get stuck on the blue bar at the dell boot screen. then a single beep. then again. then again.etc.
if i insert old card the pc boots fine, so it's not an MB failure.(manual says single beep might be that)
I'm thinking it might be the power supply that came with the unit isn't good enough.
any thoughts? what should i rpelace it with if i am right?
cheers all!

1 beep = BIOS ROM checksum in progress or failure. Possible culprits =
motherboard
BIOS corruption
ROM error
The XPS 8500 460w PSU should be fine. The Geforce GTX 1060 power requirement is only 120w. Did the 1060 have two power supply ports? Remove the 1060, add our video card back in. Boot up into windows. Reboot into the BIOS. What version is installed? The latest I see for this 5 year old system was BIOS A12. IF currently not at A12. You should install them in order.

Did you connect the power connector on the top edge of the new card to the PSU? It's a 6-pin PCI-e power plug from the power supply.
You can try this, assuming the card is being connected correctly:
With the old card installed, reboot and immediately press F2 to open BIOS setup. Copy down all current settings just to be safe.
Then power off, unplug, and press/hold power button for ~15 sec. Open case and remove motherboard battery. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec. Swap in the new video card. Then reinstall the battery. (Might be good time for a fresh one if this one is old.)
Close up and see if it works with the new board now...

Don't uninstall the Nvidia HD audio, look for it in the Device Manager, then right click and disable it. In Audio Playback, click the Intel HD audio and set it as the Default Playback device.

guys
thank you for your help - this is mostly solved, but I need some more help, let me explain :-)
I followed both your posts, updated BIOS, changed the CMOS battery etc. great, all works on the new Graphics Card! Thank you so much!
Except - during the driver installation, the sound (playing from the rear audio jack) has somehow been lost. there are plenty of posts on the internet about Nvidia GeForce drivers somehow disabling the realtek - there is now an NVIDIA HD AUDIO entry in control panel - I cannot stop this - if I uninstall, it comes back, if I disable, I still do not have my sound back.
I don't understand how to make the onboard audio work again, and I don't really understand why a graphics card installs a sound driver anyway!
Please can you help again?
many thanks! :-)
