Dell Inspiron 530 Startup Switch Problems

I am having a problem with starting up my Dell Inspiron 530 desktop PC. Pressing the startup button turns the startup button light to yellow/orange and the fan to pulse briefly but the computer rarely starts up. I have to hold the start button to turn the yellow/orange light off and then keep repeating the process several times before it eventually starts up. I have traced the startup button cable back to the motherboard and have tried to startup the PC by shorting the two pins on the motherboard using a screw driver but it exhibits the same symptoms. It appears not to be a startup switch problem but a problem with the motherboard. Any thoughts about how to fix it would be appreciated.

Regards

David

Still sounds like power supply -to me.

BTW: when was last time you replaced the motherboard battery? May or may not help, but you might want to do that before going further, if nothing else than to rule the battery out.

CR2032 3-volt lithium ion coin cell battery. ~$2 at discount stores.

Thanks Ron and Brad. I am also convinced that it is probably the PSU. I have tried a new CMOS battery but still same symptoms. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. Now to source a replacement PSU.

Even though the PC is 9 years old, it still serves a useful purpose that I don't have to use my laptop for.

Thanks again.

Is power button steady or blinking amber when it won't boot? Any beeps from the tower? Look up color and steady or blink errors in the Troubleshooting guide in the manual.

Power supply?

Try this for starters:

  1. Power off PC
  2. If you use power strip, surge protector or UPS, remove those
  3. Unplug power cord from rear of PC
  4. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  5. Reconnect power cord to rear of PC
  6. Plug power cable directly into a good outlet
  7. See if it boots now

Power button was steady amber after being pressed and stayed on until pressed for several seconds before it would go out. No tower beeps. After following the above process, symptoms have changed. Pressing power button went amber for 1 second (duration of press) and then went off. I tried starting again and on the third attempt the PC booted up. I will have a look at the link to the troubleshooting guide manual to see if this can help. Thanks Ron.

As per RoHe, this definitely sounds like a PSU related issue, especially since shorting the pins didn't work (and the results from the steps RoHe provided). On a side note I personally owned one and after years of it working great I had to replace the PSU as well (I think it was into the 6th/7th year of owning it!!). I just looked up release date and can't believe this system came out 10 years ago, time flies!

Let us know how it goes.

Best regards,

Check out newegg and Amazon etc. And there's always eBay and Dell's own Spare Parts dept.

Keep in mind the Inspiron 530 and 530s use different PSUs so make sure you get the right one.
