CPU2 memory fan failure - riser board

I got this dreaded error when ordering a CPU2 riser board to my T5500.

I've tried everything, including reset bios and replacing the battery, with no luck.

I can see that others have had luck returning the shipment to the supplier, but I'm not going to do that, as it takes to long to get a replacement, and it really doesn't address the real problem.

I think this is a bios failure with Dell, and I'm probably going to buy a z800 machine to get my two cpu's for my new esxi server.

I don't have the time to try all other solutions getting it to work, and the computer is running great in 1-cpu mode.

I just wanted to post this message to help others avoid any extra spending on a cpu upgrade, your pc might reject it, and it's possibly Dell's fault due to a faulty bios.
My 2'nd cpu came with parts (fans and such) made in China, but I don't know if this is the problem.

All I know is that my cpu riser board doesn't work.

Do you have the latest version of BIOS, A16?

Did you connect the dual processor power cable, the dual processor fan cable, and the dual processor heat sink fan cable to the dual processor board during the installation?

Manual here: downloads.dell.com/.../precision-t5500_setup guide_en-us.pdf

All cables were connected when I got the riser board, but I've also tried re-seating them just in case.

Both fans are running, but the memory fan seems to be running at full speed all the time.

Edit: And yes, I also connected the power cable.

You didn't mention if you have BIOS A16?

Do you have the latest chipset drivers, video drivers, etc?

Does Windows have to re-installed after the 2nd processor board is added? I dunno...

I do have the A16 bios, but i don't have Windows. I'm running ESXI 6.5 server.

Anyway, the bios recognizes all the memory (6x8GB on mainboard, and 3x4GB on riser board, but it does not see CPU2 at all.

I also tried to clear the boot log, reset bios defaults, and clear the cmos with jumper on mainboard. No luck.

Edit: I would hate it if I have to reinstall my ESXI server, as I do have all of my VM's running there.

If I feel experimental one day, I might try to disconnect all the internal disks (3), and install a test OS on a blank hdd or flash disk.

Installing a blank HDD and installing the OS may be a good idea, unless somebody else knows if the OS has to be reinstalled when a second CPU is added.  Is there an ESXI forum where you can post that question?

And I suppose it's possible either the riser or the 2nd CPU is defective. I guess you could swap CPUs between the mainboard and riser to see if that 2nd one works or not...

Thanks for the suggestion to swap processors. Didn't think about that..

I tried to swap the cpu onto the mainboard, and it didn't work. Never thought the actual cpu was the problem. So, now I have ordered 2 new cpu's to replace them.

The reason I ordered 2, was that I found a decent cpu on e-bay with a couple of cores extra (6 instead of 4).

I just hope my T5500 and the riser board accepts the new cpu's.

It should, since they are the same model as the old one (x5687).

Cache and cores differ from the original, but it should not matter since the new cpu's are identical.

I will update suggested answer when I get my new cpu's. Might take a couple of days.

Since you have the latest version of BIOS, you should have support for Dell's full list of supported processors in this system. That doesn't say BIOS supports the ones you ordered, but at least you have the best shot at it.

Post back and let us know what happens. Curious minds want to know...!   :emotion-5:
