Upgrading an Andromeda X51 R3 with a PCIE NVME m.2 SSD.

Just wondering how easy this is going to be. We are keeping the HHD, but having the OS and a few games on the SSD.

We have gone for the PCIE m.2 NVME version 2280, 512gb, do we need extra cables and will it be a nice and easy slot in, unslot HDD and clean install??

Hoping so but with my luck, it won't be so easy.

Tried to find the answer on here but some of it went over my head, and some were related to purely SATA SSDs.

Also, the X51 R3 has an optical drive in place. Does this have to come out, or can it remain? I hope you can give me some good advice. Or at least point us in the right place?

Thanks :)

Mike

Thank you, Andrew, that puts my mind at ease. Can the optical drive remain in?

Hi.

The M.2 HDD slot is on the GPU riser.

It's easy to get to.

Remove side cover, unscrew the two screws holding GPU in, remove GPU bracket assembly.

On the side that plugs into the motherboard (Riser) there you will find the M.2 SSD slot, no cables required.

Be sure to discharge power and ground yourself before working on computer.

You may have to change setting in system BIOS to get the SSD to work as a boot drive, check and make sure you have the latest system BIOS installed too.

If you don't make sure to go through each one, for example if your 1.2.3 then don't jump straight to 1.3.6 - Be sure to install each one.

Yes, if it needs to be removed there is only one screw holding it in place, you can remove that screw, slide out the DVD player and just sit it to the side while you work on the other area if you need additional room to move.

Can the pcie ssd just be slotted without removing the GPU assembly? Or is there a reason to do this other than accessibility?  My X51 doesnt have a cradle for "second HDD" so access is fairly clear if its just a push-fit like RAM...

This is actually my issue now - my nvme drive didnt ship with a retaining screw so i either have to find a "spare" somewhere in the case or try to figure the size and go to maplins...any ideas?
