Thermal Controls Crashing Alienware R6 (2017)

Has anyone experienced issues with the Thermal Controls crashing on their R6 system? Mine began crashing initially when it was used in conjunction with Riva Tuner Statistics Server (RTSS). It would stay running with RTSS unless you opened the taskbar at which point it would crash. This was resolved by using the new beta version of RTSS 7.0.0. Once that issue was resolved I began to experience a crash when launching games. It would run stable until I would launch Mass Effect Andromeda or Titanfall 2 from Origin. It also crashed with Fallout 4 from Steam. I was not able to identify what was causing the issue as the only resolution was a restore. The event log just showed an exception handling error that crashed the application. Is anyone else experiencing crashing of the thermal controller? This program seems very buggy to me and since it controls my case/cpu fans, having it crash without throwing a visible error message is a big problem. Finally has anyone identified an alternate fan control software solution that will work with the R6? I tried speedfan but I cannot get it to recognize the fans. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi getyourgruvon‌,

Even though the app crashes, the fans would still function because they are handled by the BIOS. Also, we would recommend you to try reinstalling the Command Center app following ALL the steps on this article, which includes the thermal controllers. If that doesn't help, you can try using MSIAfterburner or HWInfo to control the fans manually.

Also make sure the BIOS is up to date.

Eimy, Thank you for the reply. The issue with the app crashing is that the fans get locked where they were when the app crashes. Since I have custom curves set, if the app crashes before the temps go up, it will lock at a low fan speed. Should this happen again I will try the advanced re-install as described above. (As well as a bios update). Can fans on the Alienware R6 be set manually in the bios? I looked but I did not see an option for fans/speed.

Thank you!

Has anyone experienced issues with the Thermal Controls crashing on their R6 system?

No, and I play a lot of Fallout-4.

It's likely Riva RTSS, SpeedFan, or some other 3rd party app you have installed ... causing a compatibility issue, or looking for exclusive control.

Why is Command Center v4.6.20 by itself not working for you? I suggest you:

- uninstall all of that other stuff,

- uninstall AWCC v4.6.20

- reboot

- Clean install  AWCC v4.6.20

Thank you for your reply! Always good to hear from another FO4 fan! With regard to your idea, I need RTSS as it provides me my OSD and frame locking. I did make some further discoveries in this matter which can be seen in my post below if you are interested. Thanks again!

So Thermal Controls started crashing again today and I narrowed down the cause. As strange as this sounds, when I create a custom resolution in Nvidia CP and then apply that resolution in a game, the game will crash the Thermal Controller. I thought I was just going crazy because I don't see the correlation between the two... however I tested this multiple times with both Mass Effect Andromeda and Titanfall 2 and they are both reacting the same way. I have 2 custom resolutions set in the Nvidia CP and they are 2560x1440 and 3200x1800. (I am on a 3840x2160 display) Both of the custom resolutions crash the Thermal Controller with all of the variety of settings applied... IE using the diplay/gpu to scale and/or setting it to scale by aspect ratio/full screen. I honestly don't know what the catch is here but this is definitely interesting. I have tried several variations of the Nvidia driver as well. Is this just a bug or am I missing a third party factor here that I'm not seeing?
