I had the same dilemma, but ended up not getting the M17x and getting the Aurora ALX desktop instead. This is a hard choice. Many sites show that the GTX 280m SLI performs better, but hardware wise, the ATI Radeon Crossfires are more powerful, and they are DDR5. The ATI's will also be able to support Direct X 11. Ati always had driver issues, and I see the majority of people opting for the ATI Radeon 4870 crossfires.
ATI always fixes their driver issues a bit slower than NVIDIA.
I have an alienware m17x I had a bit of a think before I made a purchase on the two cards that you have thought about buying.
My notebook check shows the nvidia 280gtx dual cards running on sli are the fastest cards for a laptop at the moment the ati is second.
But saying this it is still your choice I know that dual cards will keep better performance but from my opinion on ati cross fire hd4870 and using the dual 280gtx I found nvidia to be preety good and for video transcoding they are hyper fast lol.

You can look at this benchmark list here to find out how they compare.
