Nvidia gtx 1060 upgrade in Alienware x51 r2.
Hi does anyone know if the new gtx 1060 could fit inside the case of the Alienware x51 r2? With a length of 9.823 inches I'm not sure. Thanks.

Hey sorry it took a little bit... but I'm happy to say my gtx 1060 founders edition fit perfectly into my x51 r2. No problems what so ever :)

my x51 r2 came with an amd r9 270x which came with two six pin power connectors. When I upgraded to the gtx 1060 it only requires one six pin power connector. So currently I have one of my six pins not plugged in, because it's not needed. Your gtx 745 probably only comes with one six pin power connector so you should be fine for the upgrade! (Best way to check is opening your case and looking for yourself)

I used the founders edition from nvidia's website. You need to use a rear exhaust type of card

It should just be able to squeeze in by my calculations.
If not, there's plenty of other laptops with GTX 1000 graphics cards on the market now.

I currently have the PNY gtx 970 in my x51 and it measures 9.72 inches. I'm thinking that surely an additional .10 inches should still be doable. I figure at worst I'd have to remove the small fan that sits just behind the card and replace it with a smaller one, or perhaps remove it and not replace it at all--I've read of people who put gtx 970's (larger, non-PNY) in theirs and claimed removing that fan to enable it to fit really didn't have any adverse consequences.
That said, I still can't imagine the additional .10 inches would be an issue. We'll see.

I'm also interested in upgrading my x51 r2 using this card with its gtx980 like performance in a 120W TDP. 9.8 inches will fit but you might need to remove or switch the fan in the case. Hopefully there will be shorter variants of it with 9.5 inches or below like with gtx960 models so they can fit the case without mods.

I've heard of people just taking off the front grill of the fan to get some additional space in the case. I think that might work.

That's a good idea. I might try that as well.

I just ordered an EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 for my x51 r2. It's only 6.80" x 4.38" with 120W TDP. I have the 330W power supply so here's hoping it works! The card is on back order but I'll let you guys know how it goes when it comes in.

Huh I've never heard of someone putting that design of a card in the x51. Yeah let us know if it works. I ordered my founders edition yesterday. I'll let you guys know if that card works in my x51!

My GTX 1080 fits just fine and it's as large as the 1060.
