Maximum RAM upgrade for Alienware Area 51 i7
I have an Alienware Area 51 i7, with 12GB of RAM, in three slots. I was told the maximum RAM upgrade that the mobo can handle would be 3x 8GB DDR3's = 24GB RAM, but would it be possible to install 3x 16GB DDR3's = 48GB, provided they are non-ECC registered and designed for desktop use?

Hi,
The Area 51 supports Four DDR4 slots, UDIMM, 2133 MHz (32GB maximum). We have never tested anything higher than this, you could try searching in supports forums, some users may have tried the upgrade and posted their results.

The max memory validated or recommended for use by AW for 51 R1 is 12Gb max @1600 or 6Gb max @1866; if you're one of the few people to successfully report that your original mthrbrd boots up with 24Gb (@1333 right?) - where I know of 4 people including you to say that 24Gb did post / boot / works - then consider yourself lucky in a way. 24 may indeed be the max. At this point, it's a good guess that no one in this forum can say if 48 will post (I'd start @1066 1st I suppose, if ok, try 1333 then 1600). You'd have to buy your mem from a source that accepted a return if it failed to work.
You might search online to look for any stories of any brand of socket 1366 mthrbrds running triple-channel 3x16Gb, where if it's been done before, then chances are greater than zero that yours might post as well --> I predict that 24Gb is max and that perhaps only one way to find out is to buy a returnable set of 3x16 mem and take your chances
If it fails to post @1066 or @1333 and you need let us say 32Gb or 48Gb, consdider a mthrbrd swap capable of running newer more enviable hardware
