M17x R4 Intel Centrino 6300 Wireless Issues

Hey guys, first time posting, I've run into a conundrum that has persisted for over a year now.

I have an Alienware m17x R4, it used to have a ton of wireless problems with the Killer-n 1103 adapter, so last week, after almost a year, I switched the card to an Intel Centrino 6300.

It worked great for a while, but then I ran into the same ping spikes that the Killer card gave me. They last just as long and are just as high, even when I do nothing and just ping google from the command prompt I observe ping spikes.

I tried everything I found online (updated drivers, scanwhenassociated registry edit, changed a few things in wireless adapter configuration). The problem still persists and prevents me from playing games. I had no problems for about a week after replacing the card, but now the same wireless frustrations as the old Killer card are hitting again!

I did see something on a forum about someone fixing their problem because they realized the antennae for the wireless adapter was mixed up (when I replaced the card I made sure to put the antennae in the same order as the old card), and I was wondering how I could tell if maybe that is the problem? If not, then I'm really at a loss and could use some help. Thanks!

Hallo chumpus.

maybe it is not the Killer or Intel Cards Fault. how about your other Stuff?

What is your WLAN Router Model?

have you tried to reset it?

latest Firmware for your Router is installed?

have you tried a different WLAN Channel? don't leave it at Auto.

i will not ask you if you turned off and on your Router.

Hi CarbonBasedLifeform‌,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I've tested the killer card on other wifi networks, and the wireless problems persisted. Using ethernet, however, solves the problem. Other devices work well on both of the networks that I tried, so I don't think that my router is the problem, but as you suggested I went ahead and updated the firmware on my router (I have reset it and used different channels). The router model is MI424WR, and it's a Verizon router. The firmware update was a good idea though, my download and upload speeds are higher than they were. As of now, I haven't tried playing a game yet (most of the ping spikes come during high internet usage), but the ping for google ran for a few minutes and didn't spike, so that's a definite improvement.

I'll post here later after I play a game.

Thanks again!

Well, only a very similar card will work with those antennas. I suggest you stick to same protocols and channel bindings (ie 2x2). For example ... 802.11 a/b/g/n (2x2) + Bluetooth Combo 4.0 HS - MiniPCIe 2T/2R 300mb

But again, that's just an example ... I don't know what specs your original Killer card had.

Finally, if you got the Intel-6300 card off of eBay for $5-$10, now you know what it was so cheap.  People often sell their flaky cards on eBay and pretend they didn't know.

Tesla1856 Thank You

The Intel Centrino 6300 was the card that many Killer Wireless N 1103 users had switched to, and there were drivers for it on the Dell website. I got the card for about $20, which was the price that a lot of the people switching quoted, so I assumed there wouldn't be a problem.

CarbonBasedLifeformNice Work  Thank You

After playing a few games the ping spikes seemed to have stopped, but I'll keep updating this if it returns. I'm a bit confused by how a firmware update fixing a problem that seemed to be just with my computer, but so far everything seems good.

Thanks for all the quick replies!

well, i have my Asus AC Router since 2015 and am still getting Firmware Updates. they are most of the Time Compatibility Updates or Stability Improvement Updates.

and if you have Troubles again, Pull the Power Plug for your Router. basically, Power Drain can solve alot of Problems. and i am not joking this Time.

Alright so the problem is back again. I'm seriously considering the possibility that the antennae are switched or something because it seems completely like a localized wireless adapter problem, and considering that it carried over even when I switched cards I'm wondering if it's worth it to try switching the antennae.

Doubt it's a router issue at this point, every other device has great internet and every time I use ethernet, no problem. Also when I tried other networks the problem persisted.

If you haven't swapped to Intel card, do it now (after uninstalling any Killer software).

Mark antennas if not different colors.

Take a phone pic of antennas before disconnecting them (like you should have already done)

I know, antenna connectors are lame. However, you know they are making contact because if you leave them dis-connected, you get nothing (try for yourself).

If you have already installed Intel card a while back, then get and try a different (working) one.

after Router Reset the Antennas are good but then some Time later the Antennas are suddenly Switched / Damaged.

if there is something wrong with the U.FL Antennas you should have noticed it long Time ago. bad Signal and bad Transfer Rate would be the Result.

right Click on your Wifi Symbol in the Taskbar > Network Center > Adapter Settings (Left Upper Corner) > Double Click on your WIFI Connection, then please Post a Screenshot.

I swapped to the Intel card already and the same problems that the Killer card had persisted.

Maybe I should invest in another card...

you have no IP V6 at all. you have to figure out why. your Router might not support it but i don't believe it.

your Speed is complete Shit. i know you would like to buy new Modul, but try some Stuff first.

1. Power Drain for your Router.

2. if you have 3rd Party Anti Virus / Firewall installed, disable the Software and check your Ping again.

3. go to Device Manager and uninstall your WIFI Card but don't delete the Driver, Reboot and let Windows install the Driver again. check your Ping.

4. open Device Manager, double Click on your WIFI Card, go to Advance Tag and change some Settings:

Power Mode / Quality = Highest possible

Channel Width = 40 MHz if possible. same in your Router Settings.

802.11n = Enabled

Wireless Mode / Prefered Mode = 2.4 or 5.2 depends on what you are using.

reboot and check your Connection again.

5. as already mentioned in my first Post, switch the Channel. download this:

inSSIDer 3.1.2.1 Download - TechSpot

the Tool explains itself. find a better Channel with less Interferences. open your Router Settings and choose the Channel.

awesome.

reboot everything.

3. open the Start Menu and type Programs and features. click on the Result in the Search List. search for Killer Wireless Software in the List and uninstall it.
you can delete all Drivers for your current Intel Card by opening Device Manager, right Click on the Intel Centrino 6300 Adapter, then click uninstall and mark the "Delete Drivers" Check Box. the Drivers are all gone after Reboot.
4. then pick Auto instead 40 MHz and turn it on in your Router Settings. Intel Centrino will match the Setting automatically.
5. great. see what you can do.

but there is still that IP V6 Address Issue. do all your Computers at Home have no IPv6 Address? you are connected with old IP Standard ATM.

1. Not sure what to do with Power Drain, I unplugged/replugged my router but nothing changed

2. I use Windows Defender, no 3rd party AV

3. I've reinstalled the drivers a few times before. Maybe drivers are an issue, but I'm not sure how exactly to remove old drivers and I might've built up a bunch of old drivers, both for the Killer Card and this one.

4. All of these settings were already as you wrote, except I can't enable 40 MHz, only 20, and the Wireless mode was set to auto so I changed it to 2.4

5. Installing inSSIDer as I type, will update
