How do i connect an Alienware 15 r2 to a 4k monitor? (info inside)
Does the Alienware Graphics Amplifier combine the powers of the graphics card inside my Alienware laptop and the desktop graphics card in the Amplifier. Or does it just use the one in the Amplifier? I am wanting to use an external 4K monitor from my Alienware 15 r2 (Graphics Card: GTX 980M, RAM: 16GB, Processor: Intel Core i7-6700HQ CPU @2.60GHz). As far as I am aware I cannot do this without an Alienware Graphics Amplifier? I was planning on putting an old GTX 780 or 660 into the amplifier. Would these graphics cards have the required ports for 4K? Am I missing anything?

Hi,
The Alienware graphics amplifier does not combine the laptop's GPU with the one inside the amplifier, it will only use the one inside the amplifier. Yes, those GPUs appear to be 4K supported GPUs as per the Nvidia site. So you should be able to connect your external 4K monitor to the video card in the amplifier. However, for gaming we recommend you use higher end GPUs, like the Nvidia Titan X, GTX 980 TI or the GTX 1070/1080.

Okay thanks for the quick response! Is there a way I can connect my laptop to a 4k monitor and get the correct resolution without the Amplifier? I am able to buy port converting cables if necessary.
