Help me upgrade GPU in my 5 year old Aurora R3

I have R3 that came with the AMD 6870.  Still works fine, but not so great with new games.  I was looking for help to select a replacement, and how to install it.  The specs are I7-2600k, 16 GB, with the 875w power supply.  I think I would prefer a Nvidia card as that would allow streaming through my Shield TV.  I don't want to spend a fortune, but want a card that will make it worth my while to upgrade.  Your advice is appreciated.

I suggest MSI Gaming-X GTX-1070/1080/1080ti (depending on budget)

Recommended NVIDIA graphics cards for Alienware Aurora R1 (2009 model)

Buy from somewhere you can return it. The Aurora-R3 can get very temperamental with upgrades or in general ( lucky you have a working one).

I also suggest dropping a bootable C: SSD in there if not done already (it will boot and run faster than when new).

Thanks, Tesla.  Is the upgrade as simple as plugging in the new card and turning on the pc?  Any specific configuring to get it to work?  As for the SSD, I currently have 2 standard 1tb hard drives installed.  I would love to add a ssd for my boot drive.  Not sure how I clone my current boot drive so I can add the ssd without any problems, any suggestions for this?
