AW 17R4 GTX1070 superslow on graphix and video render
Hey Swarmintelligence....
My whole experience with my AW17r4 is a total mess so far.... When i first startet it.... it was super slow... like 15 min. starting time.... then i disabled this little monster they built in for the HDD in case of a drop so it would turn it off before it gets damaged....
My first HDD (1TB) was damaged.... so dell sent me a replacement... ok so far.... i personally replaced it with a SSD
Since the beginning the laptop is SLOWER than my old DELL XPS 17L2..... and... i am super angry, cause why the heck do i pay for such a monster in data... when it turns out its just crappy slow .....?!
Well my problem is; the laptop is super slow... if i play for example Total War Attila... or Anno 2205.... it slows down ini 10 min.... the fans turn up super loud... and the fps drops to under 5 or even less.... its just a pain in the ass.....
So i contacted Dell... and they installed pcfixup or what they call it on the pc and remotely did some cc cleaning... and tune up... and all we know.... but it didnt help yet.... Monday they call me again....
Do u guys have any hints i could do on the system myself? I bought it in November 2016.... and idk what i should do... than returning it to dell again cause thats just a .... (mentioned before)
thx for ur help in advance!

is your Laptop also slow when you watch a video for Example?
your low FPS Problem looks like Overheating. if your CPU gets too hot it starts Throtteling. open Support & Assist and run CPU Stress Test for 10 - 15 Minutes. i bet you'll see red Temp Numbers. post a Screenshot if possible.

Hi Carbon Based Lifeform
,
thx for ur reply.... yep, watching videos often ends in low fps numbers.... AND... the HDMI out never worked fine.... it just throttles on every single third device like a monitor or a tv screen or a beamer... i will try ur suggestion and get back to u.

i would check your Hard Disks next but wait for Dell Call first. lets see what they say.
what you can do in the Meantime is check Windows Reliability History for Errors. open Start Menu and type Reliability, then choose Show Reliability History.
and one more Thing would be EPSA Test, but i guess Dell Support already told you that. if not, Press F12 during Boot Up and choose EPSA. let it check your System.

So this is the result from the reliability.... does that mean i should deinstall the eye-tracker?

ja. sieht so aus.
uninstall it and see what happens.
and try to find a newer Version. you can download the newest Version from tobii.com. let's see if it helps. also mention it during the Call with Dell.

Alright.... so wednesday they are switching the mainboard inclduding the graphix card.... the test itself didnt show anything uncomfortable... but fps below 50 ..... and that made the DELL Guy also curious .... so hopefully it will be good after the replacement...

okay. what about Eye Tracking Software? have you tried to remove it and play the Game? it could be just a Software Issue.

Well... after the motherboard switch i have of course same processor and graphix.... and... NO result.... the graphix are overheating and with the benchmark test of alienware the drops of FPS are still significant from 480 or even 505 to 120.... on 1070x something..... if it goes up to 4K testing... there's drops from 90fps beginning to about 45/50 fps.... so it looses half of the power in just a minute....
in My opinion this system itself is a failure.... some components just dont work together as they should and there is basically nothing u can do about it.... i am thinking of returning it.... sad... i have been in love with alienware... and even my old dell xps..... but that is just crap....

that would be my Advice. return it aslong as you can. if you are not happy from the Beginning then why bother?
also your "new" replacement Parts are probably refurbished ones, which meens you have used Parts installed now.
that is the Reality with Laptops. they are Hot, Loud and Weak compared to Desktops. one of the Reasons why i switched to Desktop Gaming. and that is not Alienware exclusive Problem btw.

Really good reports have been posted over at notebook review forums regarding re-pasting the CPU and GPU with actual high quality paste instead of the bubblegum TIM that Dell uses. Something like 20c+ temp drops (using liquid metal - read the guide and be careful!), which is pretty profound.
I did this recently on my AW17(2014) and it's helped it tremendously while I wait on service for my r4.

Status Update.... after the switch of mainboard.... the computer is even slower and has more dropouts... however, Dell refuses to give me a brand new notebook which i requested.... This is it with alienware... after this disaster i will never ever have a dell or alienware again... They lost so much in Quality and costumer service... its incredible... oh and another thing after the mainboard switch;.... the USB C Port on the back doesnt work anymore...
.... well... and i should take that just like that? Unfortunately for Alienware/Dell there are customer laws in Austria, and i will not hesitate to sue Dell for replacing the notebook or taking it back!!
