Anyone get a Samsung 960 EVO NVMe SSD working in their Alienware 15 R2?

I've done tons of searching in the forum and in the web, and though some people stated they ordered one, haven't seen a confirmation where someone confirmed that they got the Samsung 960 EVO SSD working in their Alienware 15 R2  with the latest bios - has anyone done this successfully?

Does anyone know if this is confirmed as being compatible?  Have looked everywhere to no avail.  Only feedback I saw is one forum poster said the drive's LED light is permanently on, but I"m assuming that won't be a long term issue...

Thank you SOO much if you can help me and save me a headache!

Hi Carbon,

Thank you SOOO much and I'm relieved to hear that!

If you have time and know of anything in particular I should know when doing the install, let me know. The drive will arrive via mail in a couple of days  and I plan on following the steps others took when the installed the 850 EVO but I wasn't sure if there's anything specific to the 960 EVO regarding the installation (and a clean Windows 10 install) that I should know.

Thanks!

Hi.

make sure you have the latest BIOS installed. apparentlythis BIOS Settings should work:

AHCI Mode (not RAID)

UEFI Mode (Legacy completely disabled)

Secure Boot Enabled

then choose UEFI USB or DVD Windows Setup Device from the Boot Menu and install Windows as usual.

one Important Thing: remove or erase your old HDD with Windows installed before you install Windows again. otherwise you have 2 x Windows Boot Manager which can cause some Troubles.

I had received my Samsung Evo 960 m.2 2280 pcie yesterday, surprisingly it wont fit my AW15 R2 bay. M key wont fit. The older m.2 SSD had b+m keys and had no issues with the fit. Have no idea as most forums say they use Evo 960 on their AW15 R2 units.

and you are sure you have 15 R2 Model and not the previous Version?

I am planning to install 960 Pro. Will the same settings work with this hard drive?

Hi

I installed the 960 PRO SSD and reinstalled windows. At the time of install, Windows installed did not detect either SSD and then based on what I found in the forum, I disabled Secure Boot in BIOS and then install worked fine. I installed the OS on the new 960 Pro SSD. I did not remove the other drives when doing the install.

Now whenever I turn on the machine (cold boot), it stops at the BIOS screen and gives a message that Boot drive not found. When I hit F1 to continue, then windows boots normally. For some reason, it appears the MBR does not read from the Samsung 960 PRO SSD

Any ideas how to fix this. I want to avoid having to format the machine and reinstall from scratch

Regards

Praveen
