Alienware X51 i7-3770 upgrades

First off, I'm still learning about computer builds and I apologize ahead of time for my lack of knowledge, but I'll do my best!

I have an Alienware X51 from 2013.  (R1?)

i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz (Ivy Bridge?)

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 GPU

330w PSU

BIOS: A08

I'm looking to see if:

1) a GTX 1080 ti is compatible with what I already have

2) If not, what is the highest GPU that is compatible

3) Would I need to/if need be, am I able to upgrade to any new CPU with the stock components.

My goal is to be able to run games like: Overwatch, Destiny 2, Witcher 3, Tomb Raider etc. on the higher settings.  I'm also considering a 4k monitor to get the full benefit.  I'm ok with doing some simple mods if need be.  I've read that even swapping out the stock HDD for a SSD is a help not only with space but with power consumption if upgrading to a higher watt GPU.  Any recommendations or suggestions is greatly appreciated!

Hey sorry I also have an Alienware x51 with ani5 and gtx 970 but from what I researched and stuff, the modern 10-series graphic card that you can fit in the chassis is a gtx 1060. Anything above that like a gtx 1080ti would probably require the graphics amplifier to be used with the Alienware x51 so you can use the gtx 1080ti since it is too big to fit that in the desktop. Sorry again and I hope this helps!

on my X51 R3 .. im running a 1070 FOUNDERS edition card without issues, there is also well seen  on original alienware forum that the 1070 as well as the 1080 fits with a bit of tweaking and removing the front case fan..  also will need wiring converter for 6 pin to 8 pin . but the 330 adapter can handle the founders edition cards and temp diff is  nil i found  the TI's i see are to large.. even with fan removed .. also  in fact it is an R1 .. you would need an R2 power board inside the case  as the original  R1 powerboard was flaky.. again well documented on google

yea I upgraded from a 6700 to a 6700k .. well  not to overclock persay but it is faster then the non k model ..lol   anyway  I had a 970 and took the 1070 leap cause well why not .. I can speak for the 1070 not having issues on an R3  anyway .. but with your stock internal power board on the R1 it wont handle it....

unfortunately the Power Supply is not strong enough. i can see it working with a GTX 1070, but the 1080TI has two Power Connectors (1 x 6 Pin + 1 x 8 Pin) and requires 250W. with your 330 W PSU there is only 80W left for everything else. your current i7 3770 alone requires 77W, so there is no Power left for Motherboard, RAM, Hard Disks etc.

and you probably don't need to upgrade your CPU. your current CPU is running at 3,9 GHz (Boost Clock) which is not that bad. i'm not even sure if it's possible to install the i7 3770K Version with your current Motherboard. it would only make Sence if you are planning to Overclock the Processor anyway. Overclocking requires better Cooling and more Power.

long Story short. get a GTX 1070 and keep your current CPU.

how about the GTX 1060? would it work? or let me ask this: which Card would work with his R1 Power Board? sorry, but i don't own an x51 Machine so i have to ask.

Edit:

removed the second Part of my Post.

I'm with you on that deleted part of your post :O lol

the 1060 would be a nice upgrade regardless and alot cheaper  then  a 1070,   the 1060 is  plenty more powerfull then his current  and should be fine with current  setup..

the X51 R1 power board.. (not the adaptor)  google it.. wasnt as reliable or as strong  something along that lines as the R2  i can't remeber off top of my head and im at work so limited to what i can see..lol

Thank you all for the input! And I'm glad the issue of the power board came up because through my research that's what started to concern me. But then I wasn't sure of the wattage each component required and what my current set up could handle and decided to reach out.

I had a feeling that the 1080ti wasn't going to work but I figured start from the top and work backwards lol.  I was planning on getting an Alienware Graphics Amp. (for my laptop) but, my X51 being one of the earlier models, I don't think it has the proper connections for it.  Plus why use an amp if there's a GPU that can fit right inside, right?

So, it looks like the 1060 is the sweet spot? Without needing to move fans, change power boards, etc?  The 660 is so outdated that I'm sure I'd see massive improvements with GPUs much less than 1060 .

yea just dont confuse the adapter  and power board.. power board is inside the case in which the adapter plugs into...  .. no your right the earlier X51 i believe did not  have the AGA plug.. .

yea the 1060 would be  5 fold over your 660..  i went from the 970 to a 1070 and see very noticeable improvement specially since i run 4k res..

the 1050 would be noticable improvement but id recommend the 1060 if anything   just try and find a reference(founders) style that exhaust out the back  like the OEM card you have in the X51..   ive seen myself the 10 series does run cooler then the 9 series..  but in the small X51 case . they still heat up.

yeah, well i got frustrated a little bit but then decided to fight my Anger elsewhere.

i agree. the 1060 is a great Card. i would pick one with 6 GB GDDR5, because it is more future proof.

okay. thank you.
