Alienware 17 r4 constantly chiming

I just received my brand new 17 R4 and there is a chime as if I'm receiving a system notification.  This happens randomly from 30 seconds apart to 5 minutes, regardless of what I'm doing.  It'll chime while I'm playing a game, watching a video on YouTube or scrolling through Reddit.

I can't find the source of the chime and it's getting annoying.  Any ideas?

Ya but my ancient 2011 macbook pro will work with the  Akito Thunder2 and a GTX970  the graphics amplifier shouldnt have been proprietary.

You said it. All they have to do is look at Apple display. While most apple computers are over priced with old configurations I do like the display.

I hope dell is reading this. If I'm willing to pay 3k for a laptop I would be willing to pay little more for better display. Especially for the R4 because I love it in general.

The Aliens like proprietary so they can stay in control.

I am glad to see real (actually useful) "docking stations" making a come-back. I was worried there for a while.

Is there an actual fix for this yet. I just got the 17 R4 yesterday, and this chiming sound is happening the whole time. The only thing I observed is I think it is only happening when running of battery power, not on the ac adapter.

I did play around with the sound settings. Once I knew what the sound was called, I went through all the checked boxes, unchecked one by one, and then listen for the chime. If that didn't work, I reselected it and moved onto the next one. the chimes eventually stopped and I honestly couldn't tell you which one it was.  I was just so happy to have silence.

I saw that some people have just disabled the sound, however there is obviously some reason why it is happening. Are Alienware actually going to identify and fix the issue.

I think I may have found it after spending some time trying to track it down.

For me, it is the "Killer Control Center" software that is packaged with the Killer WiFi/LAN interfaces.  I don't plug in generally, but it definitely occurs when connected to WiFi.

How to test:  Unplug a network cable and disable WiFi (Fn+F2) and see if the noise stops.

Workarounds:

- Kill the application (will likely start again by default on next boot).  Note that you have to quit/kill the process, closing it will just minimise it to the notification tray

- Stop the application from automatically starting automatically and reboot

- Open the app, go to settings, and disable the "Advanced Stream Detect" option.

- As previously stated, disable the notification sound in Windows (not recommended if you want to get notifications/alerts for real problems on other Windows apps/components)

I opted to disable the "Advanced Stream Detect" and haven't had random notification sounds since.

I am unsure of the impact that disabling the app/setting has on advanced network features, so that is up to you to test.  Hopefully Dell will pressure Killer to provide an update.  Maybe they already have one - that might be worth looking into also.

If this has been helpful to you, please mark it as such so that others have a better chance of finding this solution!

I just bought mine and had the same problem. Turns out it was the Killer Control Center which wanted to set internet speeds. As soon as I configured it the noise went away. Hope it helps.

For me, it was the Killer Control Center. All I did was go to settings, and 'Set Speed Limit.'  It's just set too low and the chime goes off when you hit the limit. I changed mine to 5000 up and down and haven't heard the chime since.

Mine chimes whether it is plugged in or not, I added a wireless mouse but it was chiming before I added that, I tried removing it and still chimed. I cant find the fix anywhere. I have called tech support 4 times and nothing they have done has resolved the issue

Mine did that too and I traced it to a network disconnect/reconnect event.

I stopped it dead by turning off power management over the network adaptor that I was using (Killer)

Open

Network and Sharing Center

Select the connection in question

Click Properties

Click Configure

Click Power Management

Unchecked 'Allow Power management to turn off this device to save power'

OK
