Alienware 15 r3 RAM memory

Hi everyone!

I'm planning to buy an Alienware 15 R3, the one with the 6820HK and the GTX 1070.

Regarding the DDR4 RAM memory, I can't decide between the 16GB 2667 and the 32GB 2400.

Anyone one knows the brands and models of each type?

What about latencies?

I tried contacting the online chat, but the salesman had no idea.

Thanks in advance!

you should buy the ram apart from Dell, you can find good brans like hyperx or G-skill Rams. Dell Rams are not low latency, they commonly use the normal ram, not the Gamer low latency ram

go with the higher MHz ram you will get better performance and the system will be future proof for a little bit either way 16gigs or 32 is a choice your going to have to make. corsair/Kingston/ripjaws are a few other brands offered in that speed of memory

My question really is about the memory you can configure when buying the laptop, the one that dell provides.

I understand 32GB instead of 16GB for just 50 more euro is a good treat.

However, 32GB is 2400 and 16GB is 2667.

Of course, 2667 should be faster than 2400, but the latency here is the key for performance.

So the thing is which option is better:

- 32GB DDR4 2400 (latency?)

- 16GB DDR4 2667 (latency?)

Anyone who bought this laptop can give a little more info?

You said memory twice in the topic. So the RAM and especially 2400 vs 2667 is one of the things that is going to have the smallest inpact on the performance. You will get more noticable difference by using laptop cooler without turning it on, than by changing between 2400 and 2667. So I suggest you buy the cheapest one and 16GB is going to be enough for the 99% of the users

I am thinking to do the same and my plan is to install 32gb of this:

Ballistix Sport LT 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - BLS2K16G4S240FSD

Unless you plan to have many applications open at once, or you will be working with large database files, the 16Gb option should be plenty for your needs.  I've used 16Gb on my desktop for years, doing coding, watching videos, gaming, ect (sometimes all at once)... and it holds up.  The 2667 option would be marginally faster, but I cannot speak to the latency on the modules offered by Alienware/Dell.  I do know that Kingston makes a HyperX set of 2x16Gb 2667 modules at CAS 15 that I've been looking at for my Alienware 15 R3, and they have been confirmed to work.  From my experience, having high speed memory with a higher CAS latency doesn't make much difference, you need to hit the sweet spot of high speed/low latency for best effect.  If you aren't squeamish about doing your own upgrades, I'd try the 16Gb at 2400 option first and upgrade later if you don't like it.
