2010 Aurora (R1?) power supply replacement

I think my PS has died in my Aurora and I would like to know what I can replace it with. The old PS has a model no. D525EF.

Thanks.

Do you want Dell (so you can use existing wiring harness) or going after-market?

Here is a list from my notes:

=======================================

All Aurora PowerSupplies fit all classic Aurora R1, R2, R3, R4 models
(including compatibility with wiring harness)

These DPN may/may-not be listed with an extra 0 in front.

Aurora

J556T 875w UPC Hipro Silver

W299G 875w 85% EPA UPC Delta

U595G 875w 85% EPA UPC Hipro

0G05V 525w 85% EPA UPC Hipro

X008G 525w 85% EPA UPC Hipro

U597G 525w 85% EPA UPC Delta

Aurora

HNRP3 875w

W85G8 525w

I understand that all those listed will work. I thought I might have an orphan since there is no parts in the Dell support site. Thank you so very much.

Dell Parts is not online. You must call them on phone. Just know that any of those will work (ie a DPN for Aurora-R4 Power-Supply will work fine).

I've seen Dell Reps suggest ztronics.com and parts-people.com. I'm not big on "used parts" but there is like ONE eBay vendor in Austin that I trust for (rare) good used working pulls. Sure is easier using OEM PS and using existing wiring-harness (not having to completely re-wire). I think that range of PowerSupplies fit in other Dell models.

If you search forum, some have documented how they installed an after-market PS in Aurora R1-R4. I would stick to Corsair or similar high-end brand around 750-850w.

I kinda like the idea of having an 850w ps in there - probably a OEM that dosen't require re-harnessing.  I've seen the W299G from a couple of places for a little over $100.

However, a strange thing happened when, in desperation, I put the ps back in and powered it up - it actually did power up.  Fans working, lights on and drives intact. What the ***?

I found out from DEll that I actually bought the PC January 2009.  I never turn it off so it has been running constantly for eight years - another reason I like Dell.  I would buy another Alienware or other high end PC but the thought of losing Windows 7 is disturbing.

A question please, Would I be able to move my old Windows 7 to a new PC?

Anyway,  I may get that 850w in there sooner rather than later.  I do so appreciate you steering me in the right direction.

Be sure all fans (including any in PS) are working. Blow-out PS and machine with air-compressor.

Maybe it was just a poor connection on main harness connector after all these years.

What's holding you to Windows-7?

Thanks, I did clean out the PC and PS with air, re-seated the RAM and Video card and replaced the CMOS battery.  Maybe that's why it came back to life?

I like Windows 7 (but I liked XP, yes and '95-second ver).  I guess I just don't like change (neurotic?).  I still use Cool Edit Pro and Excel from 2000.

I do understand that the Windows 10 experience is not too removed from 7.  I recently upgraded the wife's PC from 8 to 10 and still don't care for it.  I guess it's a control thing. I like MY icons on the startup screens and MY background pictures there.  I like to do things myself and not be bothered with the computer interfering with my thought process.  I know eventually I will have to change, probably in three or four more years, but by then it may just skip to Windows 11.

Again, Thanks.

1. Possibly. As long as it works 100% now.

2. See this about ClassicShell. On my main machine, I love it. I hardly ever look at native Win-10 Start Menu. I also really only used classic Control Panel.

Depending on version, Cool Edit Pro should work in compatibility mode, or maybe there is an upgrade you want by now. I've found that Adobe Elements 14 Suite is pretty nice.

3. That's a lot of years on Win-7. There is a lot more to Win-10 than the start-menu (most is under the hood). Microsoft hasn't worked on Win-7 in many years. Win-10 has already been around for almost 2 years. I suggest you switch now and that will be the last OS upgrade for the useful life of this machine.

For most users, Win-10's stock menu system works pretty good stock (with no 3rd party StartMenu replacement needed). Their 5 main programs are 1-click away in TaskBar. Their 10+ secondary programs are 2-clicks away in StartMenu. Takes like 2 minutes to setup. And while I prefer the desktop to stay "clean" (except for current projects) ... you can still litter it with Shortcuts for main programs if you want.

Sounds to be a solution to my fear of upgrade.  Will ponder the situation further.
