Ubuntu Software Updater crashed 22.04.4 LTS

I purchased the latest OLED XPS 13 in September and have been happily using the Software Updater to keep the Dell supplied Ubuntu OS up to date.  I ran the Software Updater yesterday.  The process completed as per normal Updater behavior and I rebooted when requested.

The reboot appeared to commence normally (Ubuntu/Dell Logo displayed) but the OS did not bring up the login screen/prompt.  In fact the screen remained black, the keyboard was backlit and the fan was running constantly.

The laptop was unusable.  I restored to Factory default (most annoying as all my data was lost - grrrrh) and repeated the Software Update - with the same result of an unusable laptop.

Clearly there is a bug within the packages using the normal OS updates.

Has anyone else experienced this failure?

I contacted Dell support (who are not overly familiar with Ubuntu).  We were able to confirm the laptop does not have a hardware issue.

Is there a website where Ubuntu issues with Dell XPSs' are discussed.

Is there a source of Ubuntu updates which have been certified as compatible with DELL laptops?

Any hints on how to get software updates which don't render the laptop unusable would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
