Pro Max 14 MC14250, Dock WD19S, Ubuntu 24.04
Hello Dell Support Community.
I got a new Dell notebook, which was preinstalled with Win11 (because our distributor only have the windows notebooks), but I installed Ubuntu 24.04. I now have 3 problems.
The first problem is, that the docking station is not recognized in the Ubuntu settings. Normally you can authorize the Thunderbolt Dock in the settings under "Privacy & Security"--> "Thunderbolt". My colleague also have a Dell notebook and Dell docking stations. When connecting my notebook to another dock, the dock is recognized immediately. When connecting another notebook to my dock, it is also not recognized by the os. So the problem is almost certainly with the dock. We did open a warranty case and the dock was replaced. But also with the new dock, we have the same behaviour. But I have to say, that everything is working like a charm. Two curved monitors, a headset, keyboard, mouse, webcam, network and a usb hub, everything is recognized.
The second problem is, that the fan of the dock suddenly spins up randomly. I do not produce a high load on the notebook (some browser tabs, a terminal and thats it). I ran a "top" in a terminal and the load is around 1 - 2 so nothing special.
The third problem is, that on the boot sequence I sometimes get nvme timeouts. We found out, that the Dell Pro Max with preinstalled Ubuntu should have a Samsung SSD. But mine was shipped with SK hynix. When the timeouts happen, it takes the notebook about 5 minutes to boot. Today it did not happen and the boot time was under a minute, as expected from this hardware.
Has anyone the same expirience with the notebook and Ubuntu?
And of course I updated every firmware:
System Firmware of the notebook: 1.4.0
Dell Dock: 01.01.00.14
NVME: 61001171
If someones needs more infos, I can provide it.
kind regards
Basti

The WD19S is not a Thunderbolt dock -- it's USB-C. It is also possible that older dock is not entirely compatible with the new system.
The answer to the OS issue may be better addressed in an Ubuntu support forum.

The WD19S Drivers & Downloads page does not list Ubuntu 24.04 as a supported operatng system. It shows Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

Hi @ejn63
Thank you for the info. All my colleagues got a Thunderbolt dock so I assumed that this also must be a Thunderbolt dock. But when it is a simple USB-C dock, then it is clear, why it is not listed under the Thunderbolt devices.
@DELL-Chris M Thank you for the site. But which dock is then compatible with Ubuntu 24.04? I just checked the Dell Pro Dock - WD25 and Dell Pro Smart Dock - SD25. There is Ubuntu 22.04 listed, but there are no downloads. So is there a Dell Dock out there, which is fully supported with Ubuntu 24.04?
We just checked this compatibility list: https://www.delltechnologies.com/asset/en-us/products/electronics-and-accessories/technical-support/dell_docking_compatibility_guide.pdf
There is a green checkmark, so we thought everything is working fine.
About the disk timeouts, we found out, that the Dell Pro Max 14 can be shipped with a Samsung disk or with a SK hynix. I have the SK hynix and this disk is not fully supported by Ubuntu.
kind regards

Using Pro Max 14 MC14250 with WD19S Dock on Ubuntu 24.04 works for USB and Ethernet, but external displays may need DisplayLink drivers. Power delivery might be insufficient; use the original charger. Audio and displays may need manual setup via
pavucontrol
andxrandr
. Limited Thunderbolt support on Linux.
