No driver for fingerprint reader Goodix 27c6:5381 on Linux
I'm running Ubuntu 21.04 on my, Dell G5 15 5587 and I've found no support for the fingerprint reader integrated in the power button.
It appears that the model of the fingerprint scanner in my laptop is a Goodix one :
$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 27c6:5381 Shenzhen Goodix Technology Co.,Ltd. Fingerprint Reader
Is anyone able to provide us a driver for this fingerprint reader ?

This is very weird because just been looking for the same thing for exactly the same machine. Not had much luck and its not looking promising. I read something about the gitlab page being deleted which is usually not a good sign. Also came across this
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libfprint/wiki/-/wikis/Unsupported-Devices
which says that libfprint doesnt support Goodix and unlikely ever will
Also came across this
http://linux-hardware.org/index.php?id=usb:27c6-5117
which isnt the same device ID as ours (its 27c6:5117 where as ours is 27c6:5381) but last status on all distros is 'failed'
actually what would happen if I change the url to match our ID?
ooo
http://linux-hardware.org/index.php?id=usb:27c6-5381
detected but most distros (which we know as we can see it)
update:
found this https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libfprint/libfprint/-/issues/43
which was opened 3 years ago but the only merge request that was associated was removed.
also looking further on https://fprint.freedesktop.org/supported-devices.html our device isn't listed not looking positive at all I'm afraid years ago

Hello speedstep!
I've bought a DELL G3 3500 laptop with 27c6:530c Shenzhen Goodix Technology Co.,Ltd. Fingerprint Reader and the driver libfprint-2-tod1-goodix (http://dell.archive.canonical.com/updates/pool/public/libf/libfprint-2-tod1-goodix/) has worked for me.

Hello, Goodix readers are supported. I just received a Precision 5760 with the 27c6:63ac Goodix fingerprint reader. It shipped with Ubuntu 20.04. The reader didn't work out of the box and not after updating to Ubuntu 20.04.3, either. After updating to 21.04, it began working. Make sure that you've enabled the driver in Software & Settings -> Additional Drivers. I believe that the reader mentioned in the original post was specifically added to the dev builds of fprintd so worst case, it might need to be built from the source code.

Hi @jermaine151 Could you please specify which additional driver was used? Which repo is it coming from ? I am trying to make that Goodix fingerprint reader work on my Lenovo Thinkbook 15 G2 ITL and that might be so useful for me! Thanks in advance

Hi Snipe2004,
Regardless of what Linux distro you use, you will find that the Archlinux online documentation is the best.
In this case, the archlinux wiki has info on these fingerprint readers and how to enable/install them on other distros.
I hope you find this of help.

Incorrect. See this for the official closed source drivers from Dell.

I successfully got the fingerprint reader working in my XPS 9300 without any Dell-specific drivers using:
On Ubuntu 22.04 (current LTS release). Right after installing I could see "Fingerprint Login" options under the "Users" pane in Settings.
It seems that `libfprint-2-tod1` may now support Dell's fingerprint reader natively.
I'm also using a Goodix fingerprint reader:

I commented here on how i managed to get this fingerprint scanner to work on my Ubuntu 23.10. It's not without its dangers, though and it may be less secure than it usually is with supported drivers. But at least now i can unlock my pc with my finger and same goes for sudo passwords. Still, be weary
