Need help reformatting Mini12 to deafault 8.04 Ubuntu

Hi, I've had my Mini 12 since Jan 09 and haven't had any problem too large until recently. I was cleaning out some files and deleted something that wasn't meant to be deleted which has left me unable to do anything with my Mini other than access Firefox through the Alt+F2 run application command. When I try to open any document or image on my desktop I receive an "Couldn't display "/home/(username)/Desktop/(nameoffile)" There is no application installed for this file type" error message and when I try to access any folders via the places menu on the taskbar I receive a "Could not open location 'file:///home/(username)/(pictures/desktop/etc.) error message. I've also been left unable to access the terminal.

I honestly have no idea what I could have deleted to cause this problem nor do I have any idea how to fix it and I've come to the conclusion that the easiest thing to do would be to just reformat and start fresh as I was able to move all the files I wished to keep to a thumb drive. When I came to this decision I had no idea how difficult it would be to figure out how to perform said reformat which leaves me where I am now. I wouldn't mind updating to a more recent version of Ubuntu (as long as its stable that is) as it seems that is now somewhat possible to do but my computer literacy is what I'd call slightly above average and I'd likely need to be walked through the process with some nudging as most of what I've read on how to do so has been a bit over my head.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and I look forward to reading your replies,

detodos

Everything is up and running again.  Past searches had failed to find Dell 8.04 image but I finally managed to find a live source for the Dell 8.04.1

Here's a link for anybody else that is having difficulties finding it:

http://linux.dell.com/files/ubuntu/hardy/iso-images/

I appreciate all the replies ieee488,

You need to contact Dell for a Ubuntu recovery DVD.

You might also want to read the last post at   http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19272618.aspx

Forgot to mention I do have the Dell recovery DVD; however I'm not fully sure how to get what I need off of the DVD onto a thumb drive.  Reading through what you linked now

I appreciate the response,

Still not fully sure how to get the "belmont-ym-stable-install-usb-20081121-0.img" from the DVD onto a thumb drive.  I know to use Image Writer to make the image bootable from my thumb drive but I'm having dificulty in finding a program to use to rip the img from the DVD onto my other computer as it seems I cannot rip the image from the DVD directly onto the drive using Image Writer. Computer I am using to do said ripping is running Vista.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Glad you have it working.

8.04 is kinda old news. If you are adventurous look into 9.10    I have it running on an older Dell laptop and it works just fine.

Cannonical Non-dell customised UBUNTU 18.04 Bionic LTS (stable)

Link with latest updates pre-installed:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/bionic/daily-live/

U will see a folder with today's date, open it (DONT OPEN YESTERDAY"S FOLDER)

Download file : bionic-desktop-amd64.iso

These are generic ISOs released by Canonical, and works pretty well on  my system.

Dell customised Ubuntu images are not listed in their servers, hence u will be unable to dwnld ( even if u had ubuntu out of the box)

I am in contact with Advanced Resolution Team & they're on it!!

For now, satisfy ur thirst with the link I gave^
