Dell XPS 8930 fails to power on after shutdown under Linux when deep sleep is forced
Title: Dell XPS 8930 fails to power on after shutdown under Linux when deep sleep is forced
System:
Dell XPS 8930
BIOS 1.1.31
Issue:
Under Linux, when deep sleep (S3) is forced via kernel parameter (mem_sleep_default=deep), the system shuts down but does not respond to the power button afterward.
The system appears completely unpowered until AC power is disconnected and drained.
Observations:
Shutdown process completes normally at OS level
Issue appears to be related to ACPI/firmware handling of power state transitions
System may advertise deep sleep support but does not fully support it
Workaround:
Avoid forcing deep sleep; remove mem_sleep_default=deep
Suggestion:
Review ACPI S3/S5 transition handling
Clarify support for deep sleep in BIOS documentation
Consider firmware update or documentation note for Linux users
This may affect other systems with similar firmware behavior.

The XPS 8930 did not ship from Dell with support for any Linux distro. See the Operating System specs here. Unfortunately, Dell would not be providing any fixes as its not a compatible OS and its an EOL model. Which distro are you using as well? Ubuntu? Mint? Arch? Other users may be able to provide some insight, but finding forums for your relevant distro to see if any fixes can be found there would be a good alternative.
