Dell G15 5530 - Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Random Crash And Unable to use 2. External Display
Hello,
I am experiencing random system crashes and an inability to use a second external display on my Dell G15 5530 running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (downloaded from Canonical). However, my colleague, who uses the exact same laptop model with the OEM version of Ubuntu pre-installed, does not face any of these issues.
Given that upgrading Ubuntu is not an option due to specific work requirements for version 22.04, I would like to know:
- Is it possible to obtain the OEM version of Ubuntu 22.04 that Dell pre-configures for this laptop?
- Are there any recommended drivers or firmware updates that could resolve these issues for the standard Ubuntu 22.04 installation?
The crashes seem random, and the system becomes unresponsive until a hard reboot. The second external display issue persists despite trying multiple cables and configurations.
Please advise if there are logs or further information I can provide to help diagnose the problem.
Thank you for your assistance.
Best regards

Dell preconfigured OS for G15 5530 is Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, not Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
See supported operating systems for G15 5530.

@Chino de Oro I can also use 20.04. Does Dell provide OEM image for this laptop with the 20.04 version?

There are processes to recover Dell Ubuntu Image on your computer. See which one is applicable to your system. https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000131480/how-to-recover-a-dell-ubuntu-image-on-your-dell-pc#Hosted_Image

@Wobaffet From my experience, you should install the OEM kernel yourself when using Ubuntu with kernels older than 6.11 on this hardware. I'm currently running Ubuntu 24.10 with the generic kernel without any issues, but I did need to switch kernels when testing Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, and 24.04.
If you plan on using 22.04, you can install the relevant OEM kernel with:
sudo apt-get install linux-image-oem-22.04
