Yellow Warning Sign on Intel Smart Sound Technology & OEM Drivers (Dell Latitude 5400, Win 10/11)

Hi everyone,

I am dealing with a persistent audio driver issue on my Dell Latitude 5400 and could really use some insight from anyone who has successfully resolved this.

The Issue: In Device Manager, the Intel Smart Sound Technology (ISST) OEM Audio Driver is consistently showing a yellow warning triangle/bang with Code 10 error, Firmware Initialization Failed.

This is not isolated to one OS; I have replicated the exact same error on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

My Ultimate Goal: I want to run the Waves MaxxAudio Pro application to enhance my system's sound experience. However, Waves MaxxAudio completely refuses to work because it relies on both the Intel SST driver and the OEM driver functioning correctly without errors.

Troubleshooting Steps I've Already Taken:

  • Performed a completely fresh reinstall of both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

  • Downloaded and cleanly reinstalled the official audio and chipset drivers directly from the Dell Support website for my specific Service Tag.

Despite these steps, the yellow warning sign returns every time.

Has anyone encountered this specific ISST/OEM driver conflict on the Latitude 5400? Is there a specific driver installation sequence, an older driver version, or a BIOS setting I need to use to get Waves MaxxAudio Pro running properly?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Contact Dell GHN (Get Help Now) chat technical support Monday through Friday. Click the blue "Get Help Now" on the right to start a private live chat session. Share the private Service Tag with them so that they can verify the ownership and warranty status. This will also generate a unique Technical Support case for your unique Service Tag. If already out of warranty, click here for the Dell out of warranty offerings.

The only other thing I can think of is to load the BIOS defaults and ensure the BIOS is at our most available version. Otherwise, if you're seeing the same driver fail in to two different OS instances with the latest drivers, then it sounds like it could be an issue with the audio chipset/controller. In which case, I'd look into replacing the motherboard.

Hi, The most effective "human" shortcut is to force-correct the driver handshake by right-clicking the yellow-banged Intel SST OED in Device Manager, selecting Update Driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick, and manually switching it to the generic High Definition Audio Controller KDealer this often bypasses the firmware initialization bug that plagues the "Smart" driver. If you prefer to keep the Intel SST features for Waves MaxxAudio Pro, you must break the cycle of Windows reinstalling the broken driver by selecting Uninstall device for both the Intel SST Audio Controller and the OED entry while checking the "Delete the driver software" box, then immediately installing the Intel Management Engine and Intel Serial IO drivers from Dell before the audio driver. Finally, ensure your BIOS is updated to at least version 1.42.0 (released late 2025), as earlier versions had a known "hand-off" bug where the BIOS failed to properly initialize the audio firmware for the operating system.
