My Dell Latitude 5400 8th generation display goes off suddenly
Hi,
I am using a Dell Latitude 5400 8th generation. While working, my screen suddenly shows some random lines as if the display is broken, and the laptop gets stuck, or sometimes the display goes off, and the screen turns black, all while the laptop is on. In both cases, I have forced the laptop by pressing the power button to turn it off. Does anybody have a solution for it?
For Information: I am using Ubuntu 22 on it.

Run a screen diagnostic - hold the D key through powerup. Do the test screens show the same fault, or are they clear?

That sounds like a hardware-related issue, especially with the screen glitching or going black while the system stays powered on.
Since you’re running Ubuntu 22, a few things to consider:
Check GPU Drivers: Make sure you’re using the correct Intel graphics drivers. Sometimes Ubuntu defaults to generic ones, which can cause instability.
Test with Live USB: Boot into a live USB (Ubuntu or another distro) and see if the issue still happens — this helps rule out OS-level problems.
External Monitor Test: Connect to an external display. If the external screen works fine while the laptop screen glitches, it could point to a failing internal display or cable.
Run Diagnostics: Dell has built-in diagnostics (press F12 on boot > Diagnostics) — see if any hardware issues are detected.
If none of the above help, it might be a failing GPU or motherboard issue. I’d recommend backing up your data and keeping an eye out for when it happens (e.g., during heat or heavy load).
Has anyone else seen this on the 5400 series?
