Latitude 7400 Thermal Issues

Lately, my laptop has been randomly shutting down, regardless of the battery percentage. It often takes multiple tries for the laptop to turn on and initiate Windows successfully. I searched the event logs and "critical temperature shutdown", "CPU thermal event", "thermal power button shutdown" show up. These appear even though the fans, temperature and battery work just fine.

Well I will suggest you to do the following:

  • Reset EC + power system
  • Disable fast startup & hybrid sleep
  • Monitor real temperatures outside Windows
  • Update (or reflash) BIOS even if “up to date”

If the system has not had internal maintenance -- including a thorough cleaning and replacement of the thermal pads, that's long overdue.  Dust and dried thermal pads can easily lead to elevated temperatures.

Install HWMonitor and monitor the temperature of the processor and other laptop components.
