Latitude 5410, both NVMe SSD and 2.5" HDD installed at same time with 68W battery?

Latitude 5410

Latitude 5410

Hi,

I have a Dell Latitude 5410, that originally came with a 512GB NVME SSD, and from reading the Dell service manual it looks like this laptop can also have a 2.5" hard drive or SATA SSD installed, but I wanted to find out if it is possible to have BOTH the NVME SSD and a 7mm 2.5" hard drive installed in the 5410 simultaneously?

I have the caddy/cable assembly and I opened up the 5410 tonight but unfortunately, was missing some screws, so couldn't do the installation, but looking at the laptop with the battery and NVME SSD out of it, it was hard to tell if it would be possible to have both the NVME SSD AND a 2.5" hard drive in there at the same time (but I HOPE that it is possible).

Has anyone installed either both NVME SSD and SATA SSD or NVME SSD and HDD at the same time in a Latitude 5410?

FYI this is the Dell page about installing the HDD: https://www.dell.com/support/contents/en-vg/videos/videoplayer/how-to-remove-the-hard-drive-of-a-latitude-5410/6341068608112

Thanks in advance!

Jim

The answer is no you cannot.

Far simpler and assured to work:  leave the system as is and use an external hard drive or external USB SSD.  That will work - without any question - - and allow you to keep the portability aspect of the system.

@ejn63 Thanks for responding.

I'm still waiting to get some parts, but it looks like there are 3 different sized batteries that fit the 5410:

- 68WH

- 51WH

- 42WH

The 68WH is the largest/widest one, and the 42WH is the smallest/narrowest one.

So I've ordered a 42WH battery and will try to see if that allows having both the NVME and a 2.5" HDD/SATA SSD simultaneously.

If that DOESN'T work, my plan is to try the laptop and the NVME and HDD, but with NO battery (FYI, I only use the laptop in a config where it is plugged into AC).

I'll report back after I've tested the above.

I want to mention/clarify that I use the 5410 in a configuration with an external (HDMI) monitor and keyboard and mouse, so if, worst case, the "no battery" config is the only one where I can get both the NVME and 2.5" HDD into the 5410, that will be fine with me :)...

ejn63 et al,

I just got the parts to try to install the hard drive and now I understand... that it is NOT possible to have both the NVME and the hard drive simultaneously.  It looks like they are mutually exclusive and you have to remove some parts from the laptop in order to install the hard drive (if the laptop is configured for NVME, there are plastic pieces that block the area where the hard drive is supposed to go and vice-versa.

Apologies for being so stubborn, but I really wanted to make it work, without an external device, but I guess that is a no-go.

Thanks,

Jim

ejn63, Slightly off-topic:  The laptop I have is a Dell refurb, and while I was reading the service manual, I noticed that, for the NVME, there is supposed to be a metal plate and thermal pad, but the 5410 I have didn't come with either... just a 512GB WD NVME itself.  Do I need to get/find one of those metal plates and put a thermal pad also?

Thanks again,

Jim

If the drive is securely mounted without the plate, you really don't need it -- these are so thin they do almost nothing for cooling.

If you want one anyway, try EBay -- there are plenty of them listed.
