Latitude 3520 (Windows 11 Pro) extremely slow boot, updates take hours, apps lag/freezing
Hi everyone,
I have a Dell Latitude 3520 running Windows 11 Pro and it has become extremely slow and glitchy. Booting into Windows can take several minutes, Windows Update sometimes runs for hours, and even launching apps is delayed with stutters/freezes.
System info:
Model: Dell Latitude 3520
OS: Windows 11 Pro
CPU: Intel Core i3-1005G1 @ 1.20 GHz
RAM: 8 GB
Symptoms:
Very slow startup (several minutes)
Updates stuck / taking hours
Long app launch times + random lag/freezes during normal work
What could cause this on Latitude 3520?
Could it be BIOS/driver issues, storage (HDD) problems, overheating/throttling, Windows Update corruption, or something else?
Questions:
What checks do you recommend first (Dell diagnostics, Event Viewer, disk health, etc.)?
Which drivers/BIOS components should be updated first for Windows 11 stability?
Any known issues with this model on Win11 Pro that can cause these symptoms?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi
I am thinking storage, so backups are vital, and run as full a diagnostic on all the hardware as you are able.

WIth only 8G RAM (16G is a more practical minimum for Windows 11), an i3 processor and particularly if the system has a spinning hard drive rather than a solid state drive, it will be slow going. The diagnostics (F12 at powerup) would be one place to start, but the system needs some upgrades in RAM and storage if you plan to use it with Windows 11.

Hi,
Your symptoms are very common on Latitude 3520 models, especially those shipped with a mechanical HDD (7200 RPM SATA) instead of an SSD. Many users report extreme slowness from boot-up, high disk usage, delayed app launches, and general lag/freezing - often resolved by upgrading to an SSD.
See this similar thread with dozens of complaints about Latitude 3520 being "incredibly slow" due to the HDD:
https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/inspiron/dell-latitude-3520-slow/647f9c15f4ccf8a8de01ff55
Additionally, recent issues with Dell Data Manager (part of Dell TechHub/Core Services) cause high CPU/RAM usage and stuttering/lag on Latitude 3520 (and similar 3420) models.
Check this ongoing thread:

Users fixed it by updating Dell Display and Peripheral Manager (DDPM) to version 2.1.1.12 or downgrading/uninstalling certain Dell Command Update components.
