Docking dell 5490 and 3x EIZO EV2790

Hi,

What docking station would support at least three EIZO EV2795 2560x1440 monitors @ 60Hz, while the laptop lid is closed. I bought the Dell WD25 but the max. resolution of the third monitor was never higher than 1920x1080. So I had to return it.

Perhaps the device was at fault, the specs are it supports no less than four 4K monitors. Or is my laptop not capable?

Both docking station and laptop are on their own power resources (95W and 180W).

thanks

The notebook is the limiting factor, not the docking station.  You need a system with Thunderbolt to support three monitors at that resolution -- your system is only USB-C.

Thx for the quick answer ejn63. Just to be sure I understand well: currently I have a DP & HDMI connected to my old docking station and one separate USB-C cable to my laptop. This setup does give me the desired 3x 2560x1440 and led me to believe the laptop does support this. When I connect the USB-C to my current WD19S (from the top of my head) docking station then it doesn’t work anymore. Surely the problem is with the old docking station, not the laptop. Hence the upgrade to a new docking station. Where do my thoughts go wrong?

[edit]

On second thought: are you saing that the three video signals cannot go through the one cable connecting the docking station tto my laptop? And that is why connecting a separate cable to my laptop does work? So I need a laptop with Thunderbolt which does allow all the three video signals to go through one cable at that resolution? I think I do understand now.

Yes, that's correct.  One USB-C/3.x connector does not have the bandwidth to drive three relatively high resolution monitors.
