If the drive from the Thinkpad didn't work (wasn't recognized), the Dell system won't run with an SSD in the WWAN slot, period.

Officially, no -- and even if it does work, bear in mind it will only work as a storage drive. You cannot use a drive mounted this way as a boot device.
