How to Test Keyboard Functionality in Dell BIOS Without Saving Changes
If certain keys fail to respond in Windows, testing them in the BIOS environment helps determine whether the issue is hardware-related or caused by software or drivers. This method uses the Add Boot Option screen, which allows safe typing without saving any changes.
This guide helps isolate keyboard issues by testing key response in BIOS. If keys work in BIOS but not in Windows, the problem is likely software-related. If they fail in BIOS, it's likely hardware-related.
Step 1: Test Keys in BIOS (Primary Check)
- Restart the system and press F2 at the Dell logo to enter BIOS Setup.
- Navigate to General → Boot Sequence.
- Select Add Boot Option.
- In the text field, type the keys you want to test.
- Press ESC to exit without saving changes.
Result Interpretation:
- Keys work in BIOS Hardware is functional; proceed with OS/driver checks.
- Keys do not work in BIOS: Likely hardware-related; continue with hardware checks.
Step 2: If Keys Work in BIOS → Software/Driver Checks
- Confirm correct keyboard layout and language in the OS.
- Disable Sticky Keys and Filter Keys.
- Remove any key‑remapping or macro software.
- Update BIOS, chipset, and keyboard drivers.
- Perform a clean boot to rule out software conflicts.

A clean boot helps identify software conflicts by starting Windows with minimal services and startup programs.
