How to Run Dell Laptop M-BIST (Motherboard Self-Test) and Interpret LED Codes
What Is M-BIST?
The Motherboard Built-in Self-Test (M-BIST) is a diagnostic tool that checks the health of your laptop’s motherboard and related internal components. Running this test helps identify potential failures and determine if service or replacement is required.
Run M-BIST if you experience:
- Laptop not powering on.
- Unexpected shutdowns or power-related issues.
- LED indicators showing unusual patterns.
Steps to Perform M-BIST
- Ensure the AC adapter is plugged into the system.
- Press and hold the ‘M’ key on your keyboard.
- While holding the ‘M’ key, press the power button.
- Observe the battery LED indicator for diagnostic results.
Understanding M-BIST Results

Solid Amber Light |
Motherboard failure detected. Replacement required. |

Next Steps if M-BIST Fails
