How to Run Dell Laptop M-BIST (Motherboard Self-Test) and Interpret LED Codes

What Is M-BIST?

The Motherboard Built-in Self-Test (M-BIST) is a diagnostic tool that checks the health of your laptop’s motherboard and related internal components. Running this test helps identify potential failures and determine if service or replacement is required.

Run M-BIST if you experience:

  • Laptop not powering on.
  • Unexpected shutdowns or power-related issues.
  • LED indicators showing unusual patterns.

Steps to Perform M-BIST

  1. Ensure the AC adapter is plugged into the system.
  2. Press and hold the ‘M’ key on your keyboard.
  3. While holding the ‘M’ key, press the power button.
  4. Observe the battery LED indicator for diagnostic results.
