How to Resolve RAID Driver Issues During Windows 11 (24H2) Fresh Installation

Original Discussion: Windows 11 (24H2) fresh install: RAID driver issue (Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST))

This post explains how to resolve an issue where Windows 11 (24H2) setup fails to detect RAID volumes due to missing or incompatible Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) drivers. The solution involves using a USB flash drive and the correct driver injection method.

Problem Description

During a clean install of Windows 11 (24H2) on systems with RAID enabled, the installer may not detect storage devices. This is typically caused by missing Intel RST drivers or improper installation media.

Symptoms:

  • Setup prompts for storage drivers.
  • BSOD referencing iaStorVD.sys.
  • Driver injection fails when using an SD card.

Root Cause

Installation media created on an SD card may not load RAID drivers properly. Dell’s recovery tool does not support SD cards, which contributes to the issue.

Solution

  1. Use a USB Flash Drive
Create the installation media on a USB flash drive. Avoid using SD cards.
  2. Use Dell Recovery Tool
Dell’s recovery tool ensures proper driver integration and only supports USB devices.
  3. Inject Drivers (Optional)
    If using a custom image:
    • Use NTLite to inject Dell’s WinPE driver pack into both the Windows PE and Setup WIM files.
    • Address any Secure Boot warnings during customization.
  4. Get the Correct Driver
Use Dell’s official WinPE driver pack or the correct Intel RST VMD Controller driver (f6vmdflpy-x64). Avoid incomplete versions.
  5. Check BIOS Settings
    • Update to the latest BIOS.
    • Ensure RAID is enabled and SSDs are in supported slots.

Additional Notes

  • AHCI Mode: If RAID is disabled, no additional drivers are needed.
  • Intel RST App: Version 19.x may prompt for an upgrade; version 20.x may not install.
  • Secure Boot: Custom images may trigger warnings—follow best practices to maintain compatibility.
