Smart media card 3in1 in Inspiron 1505 is not showing as additional drive letters in My Computer

I do not have XD,MEM STICK, or MMC cards to help troubleshooting but shouldn't the drives show up in any case? I have set the smart card and removeable storage services to auto in Admin. Tools but no joy. Any help will be very appreciated as this is a new computer that I feel should work correctly in any case. This is an Inspiron 1505 running Windows Xp Media Edition. Thanks

You can buy a cheap SD card for like $10 if you want to test it.

No, they only appear when there is a disk inserted. They aren't like a CDROM or a floppy disk. Windows generally does not show removable storage like flash memory cards until they're in the system. You can verify the drivers are installed by right clicking on "My Computer" and going to properties. Once there click the hardware tab and go into device manager. You should see something called "Secure Digital host controllers." Make sure there are no red X's through any devices or yellow exclamation points.
