If the battery is original, it's well past its expected lifespan; that's the first part to replace. Check the AC adapter to be sure its LED is ON before you plug in the notebook end; if it's not, replace the adapter.

If the system won't stay powered up even on AC, it's likely a mainboard failure.

I recently had a problem with a bad AC charger, with my e1705. The green led was lit up, but it simply would not charge the batery. It would supply power to run off AC power, but after the batery power was used up, if you unpluged it, it would imediatly shut off. Turns out, inside of the ac charger, there is a chip, that sends a signal to the computer saying, "I am an official Dell charger", and once the computer see's that, it will alow the battery to be charged. Evidently that went bad, and therefore, my computer punished me for my insolence, for not using a dell charger.

But I would agree with ejin, it sounds like you battery might have reached the end of its life.
