Isilon Gen5(X200/X410) to Gen 6(H500) Migration

Hello Everyone,

We need to migrate the data from Isilon Gen5(3xX200/6xX410) to Gen 6(8xH500). Please share me the detailed steps to perform this activity.

Thank you!

Thanks Phil.

We are going to add the new nodes to the existing cluster and migrate the data through smartpools, by modifying the file pool policy.

Below are the existing and new Isilon hardware configuration details below,

Existing Cluster:
Generation : 5
Number of nodes : 9
X200 Nodes : 3
X410 Nodes : 6
Onefs : 8.1.2.0

Data to be migrated : 491 TB

New Cluster:
Generation : 6
Number of nodes : 8
H500 Nodes : 8
Onefs : 8.1.2.0 on the first 6 nodes.
Note :  Since the last two H500 nodes has Sheba cards it does not support 8.1.2.0

Following are the questions we currently have,

When we modify the file pool policy, update the storage to new node pool will it only move the existing data to new pool or move the data and the new writes will go to the new node pool as well?

When we modify the existing Smartconnect zone with the new IP pool and remove the front end connectivity between the old nodes and TCP/IP switch will there be any impact?

Is it possible to move the existing client connections from the old nodes to new nodes without any impact?

The current plan is to exclude the last 2 new H500 nodes that has Sheba cards, since it does not support 8.1.2.0 and add only the first 6 nodes to the existing cluster, migrate the data and add the last 2 nodes back to the cluster and upgrade the new cluster to 8.2. Instead of this, can we remove the Sheba cards from the last two H500 nodes, have 8.1.2.0 and add all 8 nodes to the existing cluster, migrate the data and add the Sheba cards back to the last two H500 nodes, upgrade the new cluster? Is this plan acceptable?

And since there is no ports available in the Infiniband switch, we are going to convert that into Ethernet, would be any performance degradation due to this?

Thank you!
