Data Migration from Windows to Isilon - SMB vs. OneFS API copy
Hello there,
We are looking to migrate a ton of windows servers to Isilon. Some of the servers have tens of millions of files. Some have database dump files (350GB) and others are so tiny under 1MB.
So we want to see whether it is faster to copy via SMB (over the network) or if there could be an advantage to use the API copy for folders, files and ACL via the API interface in the OneFS system. How robust is that API system and would we gain more as we bypass SMB overhead especially with millions of files.
If the OneFS API is supposed to be a robust system that can take several threads to copy files, then we would love to try it. If it is designed for just simple uploads only and not designed for robustness. Then we will explore the traditional route.
thank you

SMB. The API is for control purposes only. (apart from the Openstack SWIFT support). But that's certainly the fastest method of data ingest. Besides you need the ACL's which must be written over SMB. If you're just comparing protocols, forgetting about permissions for a moment, in general NFSv3 will be faster than SMB, but that really doesn't matter in this conversation.
