how to migrate to a NEW VCENTER

(This is referring to a customer vCenter, not the internal IDPA vCenter.)

If you are currently backing up from a vCenter and want to migrate to another vCenter this should help:

Avamar: Steps for moving to a new vCenter

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000158056/avamar-steps-for-moving-to-a-new-vcenter?lang=en

Below are the steps as of now but I recommend checking the above KB in-case of any important changes.

Instructions
Steps for moving to new vCenter:

  • Remove any datasets, schedules, retentions groups, etc. that were created under the current vCenter domain in Avamar. If they were created in the root domain of Avamar, then they can be left, but if they are in the vCenter domain in Avamar then delete them and re-create them for the new vCenter.

  • Retire all the VMs under the old vCenter and then add them to the new vCenter.
After all the VMs are retired, their current backups will be retained in the MC_RETIRED domain. If a restore is needed, it can be done from there.
  • Once the VMs are all retired, delete the old vCenter domain in Avamar so the new one can be added.
  • After the vCenter domain is deleted, add the new vCenter domain and then add all the VMs to that domain.
  • Assign the VMs to a backup group, that can then add them to the datasets, schedule, retention group, etc.
  • After that, the VMs should be ready to backup, the only thing that may be necessary is to delete the old proxies and then recreate new ones in the new vCenter and register them with Avamar.

We welcome any questions or comments.

If you found this useful please give KUDOS to help others find the information also.

thanks
